Winter City Breaks in Spain
There's more to Andalusia than the Costas:
city breaks, Saville, Córdoba, Málaga
and an option to also visit
Aznalcázar, Écija, Huelva and Antequera

An adaptation (with extra material and photos} of an article
by Pat Keenan that appeared in Senior Times magazine earlier this year

Saville Cathedral: the final resting place of Christopher Columbus, or is it?
Every summer we migrate to the South of Spain in our thousands, we scatter along the Costa del Sol, Torremolinos, Estapona, Fuengirola, Marbella, as far as Gibraltar. We spread gallons of sun lotions over acres of white skin, eat tapas, drink sangria, beer and cold soup, our plumage turns red and brown, we stamp our feet on cool tiles in imitation of the local species and chant "olé olé olé", and then, return home for the winter. We've been to Andalusia and seen the beaches . It must be the most visited yet least know regions of Spain.
In the winter months let's see what more Andalusia will offer.  For starters, it's always warmer and yet cool enough to enjoy glorious city breaks. On our travels we arrived in Seville, drove to Córdoba and on to Málaga, from there we flew home.  This involves car hire and some driving, which gives the added advantage of adding some extra visits to take in some of the smaller nearby towns such as  Aznalcázar, Écija, Huelva and Antequera.  You can, of course, do individual city breaks, and don't worry there is plenty to do and see in any one of these cities.

Seville
Why should you go
Saville is one of Spain's most flamboyant cities with with a patchwork of architecture, flamenco dancing and a mishmash of cultural influences pasted down by Celts, Romans,Christians, Moslems, Moors and from Spain's great colonial era including the discovery of America. See these influences and how they reflect the city's lifestyles.

Cathedral and La Giralda tower
The Cathedral, one of the largest in Christendom has the final resting place of Christopher Columbus, or has it? It's even more complicated than the following shortish résumé. After his death in 1506 he had a quite a number of burials first in Spain then across the Atlantic again and buried in the cathedral of Santo Domingo in Hispaniola, now the Dominican Republic. Two centuries pass, and Spain lose Hispanola to the French, dug him upset again (or did they?) , took him to Havana, Cuba and found a new resting place for him.  Another century past and Cuba became a free self governing country. The Spanish left and shipped Columbus back to Spain, where we find him today in the cathedral in Saville.
Christopher Columbus' Tomb, Saville Cathedral
But there are counter claims that he is still in the Dominican Republic and that the wrong body, that of his son Diego, was originally moved in the first place. The Dominicans refuse to acknowledge recent positive DNA test done on the Spanish bones but also refuse to allow a test to be done on theirs. Let's rest our case there for the moment and head for the the tower, it's a long climb, but offers a magnificent view of the city.

Alcázar Palace and Old City
The royal Mudéjar palace known as the Alcazar has beautiful gardens and the Old City offers an opportunity to wander the narrow streets of the Santa Cruz, the former Jewish quarter, with its decorated facades, flowered balconies and hidden patios. Enjoy this the most picturesque and delightful part of the city, with narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, where you can take it easy, drink a coffee, a glass of wine or three, sample some tapas and simply watch the world go by- magic.
Horse and trap: Puerta de JerezSquare, Seville
Triana
Across the Triana bridge over the large Guadalquívir River you'll find the popular and unique quarter called Triana, sometimes called 'the independent republic of Triana', more narrow streets and a renowned refuge for sailors, bullfighters and flamenco artists. In the old days gypsies had to live here as they weren't allowed inside the main city walls. Then there was the Inquisition - a dark chapter in Seville's history at at the Castillo San Jorge museum - easy to miss - it’s tucked away by the north tower of the Triana bridge and next to the exceptional local food market.
On your stroll also include Casa de Pilatos, Torre del Oro, the Town Hall, Archive of the Indies (where the historical records of the American colonies are kept), the Fine Arts Museum (the second largest art gallery after the Prado in Madrid)

Metropol Parasol
Hard to miss this new towering wood lattice construction, the world's largest. Locals call it Las Setas (mushrooms) and other names too, Gaping upwards it didn't take long before I heard an angry barrage of Spanish. I thought I had somehow offended someone until another passer-by told me the anger was directed at the wooden mushroom. I quite liked it, but silently.
Metropol Parasol: hard to miss
Beneath, it houses the Antiquarium an archaeological museum containing Roman ruins, found when a car park was being constructed. There's a market and a high walkway offering panoramic views of the city and of the cathedral and the Cartuja Monastry.
Seville: shopping
We stayed on the mushroom for an al fresco lunch with a view at Gastro Sol Espacio Metropol Parasol. Plaza de la Encarnación. 41003 Sevilla. Contact: Lola Peón. Eventos. Córdoba
Why should you go
Cordoba, was the capital of Muslim Andalucia from 756 to 1031 and so it is an opportunity to explore and see glimpses of what was Islamic Spain. At that time Cordoba would have been a serious rival to the other great centres of the Muslim empire, up there with Baghdad and Damascus. During that period people from across the Arab world flocked here - poets, musicians, artists and they brought with them to Europe, all sorts of new expertise in cookery, fashion, even hairdressing.
It was also a time when Jews and Arabs lived in harmony, for example Cordoba was the birthplace of two of the greatest figures of medieval thought: two philosophers, one Jewish - Maimonides and the other Islamic - Averroes, both were born in Cordoba, lived here where they freely shared shared their theories and ideas.
Córdoba Mosque (Mezquita): once one of the eminent mosques in the Islamic world
Córdoba Mosque (Mezquita)
The Cathedral may be Christian, but once inside, it doesn't at all feel like a Christian building. With its forest of red and white candy-striped arches, it was once one of the eminent mosques in the Islamic world exhibiting features and an architectural aspect, similar to the Great Mosque of Demascus. Spanish Muslims have lobbied to pray here. However, Spanish church authorities and the Vatican oppose the idea.
Córdoba Mosque (Mezquita)

Jewish Quarter or Juderia
A tangle of narrow streets and alleys, a small Synagogue, the Casa de Sefarad, a small museum devoted to the the Sephardic-Judaic tradition in Spain and the Casa Andalusi, a 12th-century house furnished with objects from Córdoba’s medieval Islamic past and a Roman mosaic thrown in. And of course, many places to stop for wine and tapas. A place to visit.

Lunch
Over thirty years ago Rafael Carrillo and his wife, Mari, opened El Churrasco Restaurante in Judería, the Jewish quarter of Córdoba, specializing in grilled meats (churrasqueadas) over Spanish oak charcoal. - all prepared in view of the customers. But the menu is now  wide-ranging with fish, seafood, vegetables -  locally sourced and seasonal. I enjoyed the churrasco, a barbecued pork fillet with a in a spicy tomato-based Arabian sauce. Oddly while the soup is cold (gazpacho blanco de piñones - made with pine nuts), the ice cream is fried !

Málaga
Originally named "Malaka" - nobody seems quite sure why but most likely it was named after a deity worshipped by the Phoenician traders and fishermen who established the place sometime in the seventh century B.C.  Anyway, the fact is that Malaga is one of the oldest cities in western Europe and for that reason alone is worth a visit. Even Homer, the Greek poet (not Simpson), wrote of it's mild climate "and the gentle maritime Zephyrs that sweetly refresh."
Bus Tours
In Malaga the official tour bus is easy to spot since it is the only red, topless, double decker  you are likely to see in the city. Your €15 ticket is valid for 24 hours any you can hop on or off at any of the 12 stops, starting at the Main Bus Station linking the main Post Office building (opposite El Corte Ingles ) with the Port, Malagueta Beach, the Bullring, Gibralfaro Castle, Picasso’s birthplace, the Alcazaba and the Cathedral.
The ticket also allows you to take another bus from the Main Bus Station and gain free entrance to the Botanical Gardens Finca la Concepcion on the north side of the city.(www.malagatours.net)

Castillo de Gibralfaro
On a hill overlooking Málaga and the seafront, the ruins of Castillo de Gibralfaro, an ancient Moorish fortress, offer terrific photo opportunities. Incidentally a nice place for a relaxing al fresco lunch is the terrace of the Parador hotel on the hill.
The castle was the site of a three month stand off by the citizens of Malaga with the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. The siege ended when hunger led to the citizens' capitulation. Ferdinand occupied the site while Isabella took up residence in the town. What remains today are the still solid defensive walls which rise majestically over the city amid dense woods of pine and eucalyptus

Pablo Picasso.
Today's Malaga has developed a discernible sense of pride that can be largely attributed to Pablo Picasso. Picasso was born  here in Malaga in 1881 and spent most of his childhood in the city. But he grew to detest the dictatorship of Generalíssimo Franco and resolved never to set foot in Spain during his rule. In reciprocation, Franco declared Picasso persona non grata and banned his work as "degenerate art."
Now, the 20th century’s most famous artist has been reclaimed as Málaga’s favorite son. The airport and the main beachfront avenue have been renamed for Picasso, and the Museo Picasso Málaga, Palacio de Buenavista, San Agustín 8. (www.museopicassomalaga.org), housing a fine collection of his works,  has become the centerpiece of  a prosperous new surge in the city's tourism. Fundación Pablo Ruiz Picasso y Museu Casa Natal (Picasso’s birthplace), Plaza de la Merced 15, (www.fundacionpicasso.es) is also open to the public.
Malaga´s unfinished cathedral
Malaga´s unfinished cathedral
Malaga´s unfinished cathedral built between 1528 & 1782 was partly built on the site of a former mosque. Unfinished because the plan was for two towers but lack of money due to funds been redirected to help the American Revolutionaries in their fight with the British, resulted in the completion of only one, thus giving rise to the name 'La Manquita', loosely translated as "one armed woman". The city's residents are quite proud of their unfinished masterpiece and there are no plans to ever finish that second tower. )

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is, of course, a controversial topic and the Spanish now also appear to be divided on the issue. Of course, you don't have to, but as I happened to be staying in Hotel MS Maestranza whose rooftop spa and solarium actually overlooked the bullfighting going on in the Plaza de Torres 'La Malagueta' alongside, I took a peek.  The ring also houses a bullfighting museum, Museo Taurino Antonio Ordonez. Outside the bullring there is a statue depicting the great bullfighter Ordóñez who became the inspiration for Pedro Romero, the matador in Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises. If interested, Spain´s bullfighting season, lasts from April to October.

Málaga's Cafe Central: as good a way to kick start the day as any
Coffee, Chocolate and Churros
Churros con chocolate
Café Central, Plaza de la Constitución, (www.cafecentralmalaga.com) is the oldest coffee bar in Malaga and as good a way to kick start the day as any. In 1940 one D. Jose Prado, the proprietor invented a formula for ordering a coffee to suit all tastes starting with 'solo' (no milk) through 8 stages to 'no me lo ponga' (which is mostly milk).
Or you can slow start the day, with something the Spanish brought back from the New World over 500 years ago -chocolate - in the form of 'Churros con chocolate.' Churros" are fritters, doughnuts but  moulded into  long straight or slightly curled lengths, eaten while warm sprinkled with sugar or honey and dunked in a cup of hot chocolate made so thick that you can stand your churro in it!

Grilled sardines on the beach
Ok, so we came to see the city but who can resist grilled sardines on the beach? Head east along the coastal road from Malaga and just beyond the Baños del Carmen you'll  the small seaside promenade of Pedregalejo. The beach is popular with locals but the fresh seafood is the big attraction for outsiders.  Most of the restaurants overlook the beach and have been here for over twenty years.
We had lunch at Restaurante Maricuchi. (Paseo Marítimo del Pedregal, 14 - 29017 Málaga. Tel. +34 952 29 04 12) I feasted on fried anchovies ("boquerones fritos"), fried squid ("calamaritos") and just-caught sardines skewered on a stick grilled over a wood fire), small clams cooked in white wine ("coquinas"). All washed down with jugs of refreshing sangria. Delicious!

Italian Beer: craft beer from the mountains to the sea
Once upon a time three beers reigned: Birra Moretti, first brewed in Udine in 1859, Dormisch di Resiutta dating to 1881 and Dreher, established in Trieste in 1865: Friuli Venezia Giulia's beermaking tradition stretches back a long way and conjures up beers that have made their name on the international scene.

Carnia, in the Natural Park of the Friulian Dolomites (Parco naturale delle Dolomiti friulane) is the source of a number of the ingredients used in the beers produced by the small Foglie D'Erba brewery in Forni di Sopra which, after winning Beer of the Year prize in 2010, a few months ago opened a new outlet where bottles can be bought or tasted on the spot. A short distance away lies Sauris, where the smoked flavour is found not just in the ham of the same name but in a local beer too, although the pale Pilsen, red Vienna and Canapa versions should also not to be missed.
Remaining in the mountains, the Resiutta glacier, in the heart of the Natural Park of the Julian Prealps (Parco naturale delle Prealpi Giulie), Hapsburg businessmen began producing beer here as early as the nineteenth century, taking advantage of the excellent waters from the Resia stream. Production of craft beers continues to this day at Resiutta, while in nearby Coccau the first zero-mile beer is produced in the Valcanale area using  aromatic and medicinal plants  grown locally.
Onto the coast, and in Trieste, in the Karst area and in Muggia there is a proliferation of small craft breweries, some of them with names inspired by the Bora, the strong wind that blows across Trieste. By contrast, in Paradiso di Pocenia we find a beer made from rice, straw-yellow colour, and a subtle flavour.
Finally, in the Pordenone area, many niche breweries waiting to be discovered: from the beers of Cavasso Nuovo, flavoured with fruit and flowers, to the ones produced in Caneva with water from the Livenza river and in Travesio, a beer made from a blend of hops, malt and the pure waters from the foot of the mountains.

Hugely popular with the locals, the festival has become a symbol of Polynesian heritage and a great chance to interact with local people whilst learning the sacred Tahitian past-times. Dance, sing, eat and compete; this year’s ‘Celebration of Life’ is not to be missed.
Billabong Pro Surfing Competition, August 10-25, 2015
With seven “perfect 10” scores, last year’s Pro Surfing Competition at Teahupoo was the most exciting surf competition of the ASP World Tour 2014, and this year spectators can expect another thriller. With the likes of four-time champion Kelly Slater and reigning champion Gabriel Medina amongst the 40 pro-surfers returning to the South Pacific waters, visitors can relax on the beach whilst witnessing world-class talent.
Hawaiki Nui Va'a International Canoe Race, November, 4-6, 2015
This 130km outrigger canoe race is split into three stages over three days; competitors begin in Huahine and cross the finish line in Bora Bora. The race is an extreme test of physical and mental endurance, but with over 100 crews coming from all over the world, it was also designed to link the islands and celebrate the beauty of the South Pacific.

The Lady Who Flew Africa: The Aviatrix, BBC4, 9.00pm Tuesday St.Patrick's Day, March 17

Mary Heath became the first pilot to fly solo from Cape Town to London in 1928. Tracey Curtis-Taylor, 85 years after, follows the route in a restored 1942 Boeing Stearman biplane. She faces many of the same challenges as her predecessor on her eight-week trip, including navigating through war-torn nations, albeit using GPS instead of pages torn from an atlas as used by Lady Heath. With a top speed 95 miles per hour, an operating ceiling of 10,000ft and a range of 450 miles she has a bit of an edge on Lady Heath’s plane, similar in size and design, but with a less powerful engine, so couldn’t be flown at low altitude; the challenges Curtis-Taylor faces are nonetheless on a par with her pioneering ancestor.

Florida Keys Annual Underwater Easter Egg Hunt
Divers and snorkelers visiting the Florida Keys who want to become deep-sea "egg-splorers" (- sorry!) while supporting a Keys charity can join the annual Underwater Easter Egg Hunt staged Sunday, 5 April 2015, in the warm, clear waters off Islamorada.
The unique Easter Sunday event is hosted by Captain Slate's Scuba Adventures, located at mile marker 90.7 Oceanside in Tavernier at the Casa Mar Village shopping enclave.

Captain "Cottontail" Spencer Slate has offered dive, snorkel, underwater wedding and glass-bottom boat packages in Florida Keys waters since 1978. He also promotes ocean conservation to divers, encouraging them to be active stewards of the undersea environment.
Slate is renowned for staging offbeat events such as the Easter "egg-stravaganza," a popular underwater game of hide-and-seek that awards prizes to participants, including a particularly valuable goodie basket for the fortunate finder of a "golden egg."
Preceding the search, Captain Slate dons a giant bunny suit and dive gear and hides brightly coloured Easter eggs for eager bounty hunters. Real eggs and nontoxic dyes are used to avoid negative environmental impacts. Boats full of egg seekers then head out to a secret location adjacent to shallow reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, where the philanthropic revellers take the plunge to find the hard-boiled hoard.A morning two-tank trip, the dive excursion is specially priced at $65 per certified diver, including tanks and weights. Snorkelers pay $30 per adult and $25 per child, including gear.
Divers and snorkelers are asked to check in at 8 a.m. Easter morning at Captain Slate's Scuba Adventures. Up to three boats are scheduled to depart at 8:30 am. Participants must pre-register for the event. Money raised during the annual undersea hunt benefits Kids In Special Situations, providing the area’s needy children gifts and holiday cheer throughout the year.

The Azores -named the first Global Sustainable Destination
The first ever ‘Global Sustainable Destinations Top 100’ study named the volcanic archipelago of the Azores, the world’s most sustainable tourism destination in 2014.

The Azores makes effective use of renewable energy, and its main industries include agriculture, dairy farming, livestock ranching, fishing, and tourism. Only around 5% of the Azores’ ground is urbanized, and the number of protected areas (which include UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO European Geoparks) is continually rising, thanks to the importance placed on the environment in schools.
Quality Coast, the largest international certification programme for sustainable tourism destinations also named the Azores the top sustainable tourism destination of 2014, beating more than 1,000 other island and coastal destinations to the top spot and making the islands the first and only destination to achieve the Quality Coast Platinum Award.
So in 1915 the environmentally-conscious traveller will find wildlife options including whale and dolphin watching, swimming with wild dolphins and blue sharks, scuba diving for pelagic fish and marine turtles, bird watching, big game fishing and horse riding. And all the usual activities: hiking and cycling volcanic trails, canyoning, kayaking, rock climbing, paragliding, surfing, golf and sailing.
Responsible Travel has also launched a two-minute guide on the Azores for those looking to holiday in the archipelago in 2015. Downloaded at www.responsibletravel.com/holidays/azores/travel-guide

DH Lawrence
in Taos New Mexico
and the Elgin Marbles
A tale of looting, banned books, "indecent" paintings
and a plan to return the Elgin Marbles to Greece.
Pat Keenan takes us from the Acropolis in Athens,
to police raids in London and to an encounter with Saki Karayas
at the La Fonda Hotel in Taos, New Mexico.
Saki Karayas: "…return of the Elgin Marbles to Athens"                                          Watercolour by Pat Keenan

 The 7th Earl of Elgin
A statue of the headless Greek river-god Ilissos has recently been loaned to the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg by the British Museum in London, and it immediately sparked off a furious diplomatic response from Greece. The Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras described the decision to loan the sculpture as "a provocation to the Greek people." The statue in question is from the controversial Elgin Marbles, a collection of classical Greek sculptures originally part of the Acropolis in Athens. The British say they were 'acquired.' The Greeks say they were 'looted'
The 7th Earl of Elgin Thomas Bruce in 1801, while serving as the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in Athens, removed the marbles from the Acropolis and gifted them to the British Museum. He claimed to have obtained permission from the Ottomans but the permission document somehow  went missing - conveniently, say the Greeks.
Bear with me while I deviate.

"Frankly Disgusting and Indecent"
In June 1929 police raided the Warren Gallery in London and confiscated thirteen "indecent" paintings. They were taken to the Marlborough Street Police Station, to await their fate at the descretion the courts. The Observer newspaper at the time called them "frankly disgusting", the Daily Express described the exhibition as "ugly,""repellent,""frankly indecent" and warned that "the subjects of some of them will compel most spectators to recoil in horror." One of the paintings they denounced showed a "hideous bearded man holding a fair-haired woman in his lascivious grip."
Saki's office at the La Fonda Hotel Taos                                                       Photo Pat Keenan

The artist was none other than DH Lawrence better known as a writer and author of Lady Chatterley's Lover (itself banned in Britain a year earlier - Ireland, of course, followed suit in 1932)
The seized paintings, if found indecent, would, most likely be disposed by fire. Instead after appeals from Lawrence they were returned to him on condition that he would take them out of the country and promise that they never be shown in England again. At the time he was residing, mostly for for health reasons, in dry desert air of Taos, New Mexico in the United States

Forbidden Art, Taos, New Mexico
In 1994 I found myself in Taos New Mexico outside the Hotel La Fonda where nine of the deported paintings ended up. The hotel, mindful of erotic content, charged $1 for a private viewing of the "D. H. Lawrence Forbidden Art" collection in Saki Karayas, the hotel owner's extremely cluttered office. Saki, born in New York of Greek immigrants, warmly welcomed me in and although it was sometime in the afternoon he was still in his dressing gown. I was told later that he never ever got up before noon.
Part of the Forbidden Art Collection                                                       Photo Pat Keenan
He told me of his passion for Lawrence as painter and for his literary works he showed me several first editions
The office was obviously the habitat of a very amusing and eccentric man, his shoe collection, rivaling that of Imelda Marcos, lined in a continuous row all around the office skirting boards. The walls were totally covered, a clutter of the forbidden art and a wide-ranging assortment of other paintings, any space left was filled by framed photos and mementoes.
www.lafondataos.com/hotelshistory.html
"Return the Elgin Marbles to Athens"
Saki would not say what he paid for the paintings but he knew what he wanted for their return. He also knew that the moral climate had changed in Britain, that the DH Lawrence Centre at Nottingham University had urged that the National Heritage fund be used to bring them back to Nottingham. They had £4m. in mind, Saki suggested to me a figure of £7m. and… with a big sideways grin: "… the return of the Elgin Marbles to Athens".
I'm not all that sure if he ever met Lawrence, I stupidly forgot to ask. Saki certainly was well acquainted with "the Lawrence women' as he put it. In fact I gathered that Saki had acquired a reputation around Taos circles as quiet the ladies man earning him the title "Don Juan of Taos"
His circle of ladies included Lawrence's wife, Frieda von Richtofen, a cousin of the Red Baron, the famous WW1 German flying fighter ace; Mabel Dodge Luhan, a wealthy American patron of the Taos art colony; Lady Dorothy Brett, a  painter with an aristocratic British pedigrees who moved to Taos at the invitation of Lawrence; Millicent Rogers, art collector and heiress to Standard Oil Company fortune and the important artist, Georgia O'Keefe, recognized as the Mother of American Modernism who was a immence influence on Lawrence as painter.
Frieda Lawrence died in 1956 and her estate, which included the Lawrence paintings, passed on to her husband Angelino Ravagli. A few months later Angelino sold them to Saki. Saki died in 1996, just two years after our meeting. Since he never married, he left his hotel and the paintings to his good friend, George Sahd.

Hacienda del Sol: snug and warm in 1994                                                         Photo Pat Keenan
In 1994 I stayed at Hacienda del Sol a luxury Bed and Breakfast with breathtaking views of Taos Mountain and it is still there today just a mile north of the Taos Historic Plaza and the indecent paintings of DH Lawrence. Oh, and I do remember that my beautiful adobe styled room included access to relax at night in the outdoor Hot Tub under the stars, surrounded by snow, yes snow, and the Taos Mountains.

Paris, city de l’amour
Enchanted by a recent, all too short visit,
Louise Coughlan found lots to enjoy
for her family and, herself

Paris is a beautiful city with magnificent sightseeing, amazing architecture, steeped in history.  Our hotel Eugenie was conveniently situated in Rue des Arts just around the corner from St. Michel, a busy street with plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes. The hotel is just a few minutes' walk from the Saint-Michel metro and RER

From the airport we got the RER and the Metro to Saint-Michel metro. The hotel is just a few minutes' walk.  We ate in a beautiful Italian restaurant with friends and toasted to a great weekend.
The next day we visited nearby Notre Dame Cathedral.  This famous Gothic cathedral attracts millions of tourists every year, and it took nearly 200 years to finish. It started in 1163 by an architect named Maurice de Scully and during the French revolution statues were destroyed due to the fact they were, mistakenly believed to be French kings instead of biblical kings.  In the 19th Century a famous architect Viollet-le-Duc decided to once again restore this Cathedral.  I managed to view the Cathedral treasury which holds the Holy Crown and a piece of the holy cross.
Notre Dame Cathedral
Just off the Champs Elysee lies the Arch de Triomphe, this monument honours those who fought and died in the French revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. After several failed attempts to cross the busy road leading to the arc, we discovered an underpass.  A massive queue had formed to climb the grueling steps to the very top.  However I had viewed the city from this beautiful monument on a previous occasion and decided to stroll down the Champs Elysee instead.  This stylish avenue is bursting with elegant shopping boutiques, exquisite cafes and restaurants.  Recently it has become a venue for celebrations such as the arrival of the Tour de France and for the military parade each year on the 14 July, celebrating Bastille Day.
 Arch de Triomphe
In  the L'Atelier Renault showrooms (www.atelier.renault.com/en/),I purchased a miniature car for my son.  On our walk to Hotel Les Invalides we passed by Le Grand and Petite Palace and stood in awe at the magnificent and exquisite buildings.
Under Louis XIV command Hotel Les Invalides (www.musee-armee.fr/en/english-version.html) was once a home for wounded soldiers. L'Hôtel des Invalides, contains museums and monuments, all connected with the military history of France, and still contains a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans, original purpose for the building, One of the internal museums is totally devoted to the Second World War. A full day is needed to see all the museums and especially don't miss the crypt which holds Napoleon's red porphyry tomb.
Jardin du Luxembourg: the Grand Basin
With a huge population and a very fast pace of life, there are plenty of parks and recreation areas where you can take a break from it all.  Just a short stroll from our hotel is the very attractive Jardin du Luxembourg.  Romance was in the air as couples strolled through the park holding hands.  Families hired miniature sailboats and try to maneuver them across the the octagonal pond, also called the Grand Basin. Many activities were ongoing during the day such as pony rides, tennis, tai chi, bowling as well as some very energetic jogging.
With so much to see and do in Paris I will be back soon - à bientôt.

FOLKLORE and HISTORICAL EVENTS
FESTA DEI CERI (RACE OF THE CANDLES)Gubbio – 15th May 2015
The Festa Dei Ceri is one of the oldest, if not the oldest Italian folklore events, The festival is an solemn act of devotion on the part of the Eugubini towards their Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini which started in 1160, the year of his death. Since then, every 15 May, the eve of the day of mourning, the devotional offering to the patron Saint is a fixed appointment for the people of Gubbio who take part in a great mystical procession, carrying candles all around the town and up Mount Ingino (where since 11 September 1194 the body of Saint Ubaldo lies, in the church which bears his name). www.ceri.it
THE PALIO OF FERRARA
Ferrara, May 2-31, 2015
The Palio of Ferrara is the most ancient event of its kind is the world dating back to 1279. It is peculiar for its kind of ride that is joyful and so different from other warlike palii. This is a very important moment for the city: all the Contrade participate wearing dress of different colours to gain the “palio”, but also and overall it is a festivity to remember the Renaissance, a period during which Ferrara was really a capital. The Palio is run on Sunday 31 May. www.paliodiferrara.it
GIOSTRA DELL’ARCHIDADO
Cortona, June 14,  2015
The Archidado Joust traces its origins back to the Middle Ages and was officially created in 1397 to celebrate the wedding of Francesco Casali, the Lord of Cortona, and Antonia Salimbeni, a noble woman from Siena. In the city of Cortona, this historical event is recalled every year on the second Sunday of June, when people are lead back to the ancient medieval splendour of the city. The streets are decorated in medieval style, ladies, knights, flag flyers, crossbow shooters, soldiers, pages, civil and religious authorities, all dressed with fine costumes, liven up the city center, which is rich in history and artistic beauties of every time. www.giostr
PALIO DEL NIBALLO
Faenza, Emilia Romagna, June 28, 2015
Seeing the Palio del Niballo is like living and enjoying a day in 14th-century Faenza. Flag-wavers, knights, and drummers dressed in the colours of the town's five contending “rioni” (i.e. quarters) - White, Yellow, Black, Red and Green - flood the most charming parts of the old town centre, accompanied by the pounding of drums. The palio consists in hitting a revolving dummy with a spear. The dummy is fashioned as a Saracen
warrior (called the “Niballo”) and the idea is to get your horse to run past faster than the Niballo turns. In June, before the palio, the rioni warm up with flag-waving and music competitions and the Bigorda d'Oro (a palio for younger racers). www.paliodifaenza.it
LUMINARA AND RACE OF SAN RANIERI
Lungarno, Pisa, June 16,17, 2015
www.pisaunicaterra.it/en/villages-and-cities-of-art/pisa-en.html
On the occasion of the Feast of San Ranieri, Patron Saint of Pisa, celebrated annually on 16-17 June, the enchantment of the illuminations of Saint Ranieri is renewed on the streets running along the river Arno (the so-called Lungarni). In fact, following the ancient tradition the Pisans celebrate their Patron Saint on the following day with the historical Regatta of San Ranieri (Palio). There are more than a hundred thousand wax candles which at every edition are meticulously set in smooth and white glasses and fixed then onto wooden white-painted frames, modelled in such a way as to highlight the outline of the palaces, of the bridges, of the churches and of the towers reflecting the river. www.pisaunicaterra.it/en/villages-and-cities-of-art/pisa-en.html

Driving Holidays in Spain and Portugal

Driving Holidaysin Spain and Portugal

Lorna Roberts has given us a few words of her experience on Portuguese motorways and some useful advise on combining driving holidays in Spain and Portugal.

I have driven very often in Portugal in the past but not since the automatic toll machines have been in operation. Not good for foreign tourists and the general opinion in Portugal is that it is a rip-off and out to catch drivers of foreign cars which doesn't seem to be a good way to attract tourists!

Historic Paradores Close to Motorways
I stayed in a few of the most beautiful Paradores as I travelled from the south of Spain to Santander on the north coast and I realised how many are close to motorways and therefore perfect stopping places (the meaning of the word Parador) when travelling by car. I have put together a page describing some of these which I hope will be useful for people planning a fly-drive holiday or taking their own car to Spain. One word of warning if combining Spain and Portugal - in Spain the AUTOVIAS were built with EU money so there is no charge on these. They are excellent roads with A numbers and cover most of the country. The older motorways with AP (Autopista) numbers have tolls.

Portuguese Motorways - Beware
However in Portugal all the motorways have tolls and have two systems with some normal pay stations and also cameras across the road at frequent intervals. Although Brittany Ferries say these can be paid up to 24 hours after passing them, it seems that this is not possible if you are driving a foreign car. I spent a long time in two post offices trying to pay but as my car was not Portuguese I should, apparently, have paid in advance and am likely to have a hefty fine although I had already paid 90 Euro at pay stations travelling from north to south in Portugal.
So…my advice, if going to the south of Portugal take the Autovia which runs parallel to the Portuguese border, via Salamanca and Extremadura, with no tolls. It is such a beautiful road and passes many wonderful historic cities with Paradores in their centres.
Three Paradores where I stayed recently were all very close to Autovias (A roads with no tolls)
The Parador at OROPESA is beside the Autovia de Extremadura, linking  Madrid to the west. The 14th century castle-palace is one of the Parador museums with tasteful decor and furnished with antiques. The Parador is at the top of the town with fine views of the Gredos mountains.

The Parador at LERMA is a magnificent 17th century Ducal Palace, near Burgos, the perfect stopping place when travelling on the Autovia del Norte from Madrid to the north coast. It has been beautifully refurbished with the restaurant and bar leading off the central cloister, and bedrooms decorated to suit the palace.

The Parador at LIMPIAS is 4 kms from the Autovia de Cantabrico, the north coast motorway from the French border to Galicia. The 20th century Palace de Eguilior is surrounded by gardens and woodland. Limpias is a village 8 kms from Laredo on the coast, between Bilbao and Santander airports and ferry ports, so a good base to start or end a holiday.

Below, Lorna outlines some upcoming Lorna Roberts Holidays
- keep up to date on www.lornarobertsholidays.com

Devon in May
Unfortunately we are unable to have any more rooms for this holiday, but I am keeping a waiting list as it is possible that a few rooms might become available nearer the time. I am looking forward to meeting up with some of our regular "Parador people" in Devon in May.

Autumn Tours
I have now updated the details of these holidays as we have made the dates more flexible to enable people to travel on a choice of flights if wished. I shall send this with the next newsletter but if anyone would like the details now please let me know and I can email or post the information to you.( email Lorna at: lornaroberts13@gmail.com)  The dates are: CARMONA & CADIZ (always a favourite!):  29 September - 5 Ocotber with an opportunity to stay for extra nights at Ronda, Malaga or Nerja.  LORCA, JAVEA & EL SALER: 14 - 19 or 21 October. This can be a 5 might or 7 night holiday.

May & June in Paradores
May and June are the loveliest months in Spain with long days and generally good weather. Strangely they are not the busiest months in Paradores so the rates are good with a lot of promotions still available. As always we check through all the offers when making reservations, and as many of these do not appear on other websites we, as the official representatives, can always find the best rates. lornaroberts13@gmail.com  095 23511 or patricia@maptravel.ie  01 8783111
SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER are the most popular months so the offers disappear quickly, so I always stress that people should book as early as possible, especially for the first two weeks of September which are already fully booked on some dates in many Paradores.

Wellington
The Battle of Waterloo
Dublin, London and Berlin
My pen and ink drawing of Apsley House, also known as Number One, London (today, 149 Piccadilly, Hyde Park Corner). It was the home of Arthur Wellesley, 1st. Duke of Wellington and now is The Wellington Museum.
www.facebook.com/PatrickKeenanGallery
Wellington: "because one is born in a stable doesn't make one a horse."
Arthur Wellesley was, whether he liked it or not, a Dubliner. Once, asked his opinion of an Irish regiment and their prowess for hard drinking, is said to have made the comment: "Just because one is born in a stable doesn't make one a horse."
His place of birth is generally believed to be the family townhouse at 24 Upper Merrion Street, Dublin, now part of the five star Merrion Hotel, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and includes the 2-star Michelin Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud. Most biographers accept this from information gleaned from newspapers of the time. However other addresses compete - his mother, Anne, Countess of Mornington, in 1815 reminisced that he had been born at 6 Merrion Street - this might also have been Mornington House next door, and anyway, also now part of the Merrion Hotel.
He spent most of his childhood at his family's two homes, the first a large house in Dublin and the second, Dangan Castle, 5 km north of Summerhill on the Trim Road in County Meath.
When staying at Dangan he would attend school in Trim and in Dublin, at Mr. Whyte's Academy.
In Dublin there is the Wellington Monument, a 62 metre high obelisk (the largest in Europe) located in the Phoenix Park; Wellington Road where I worked for years and the pub where I sank many pints. It is still one of Dublin's best pubs - The Wellington in Upper Baggot Street. And who with Ireland's notorious wet weather would walk the land without a pair of good rubber 'Wellies' -Wellington Boots. The Duke of Wellington instructed his shoemaker, John Lobb, Shoemakers, 9 St. James's Street to modify the 18th-century Hessian boot. Lobb made shoes for the rich and famous: Queen Victoria, Louis Mountbatten of Burma, Frank Sinatra and the present Queen Elizabeth II.  By the way, should you buy a pair of shoes here, don't expect much change out of £1,500 .

While we're here, we could go next door for a hat. The hat Wellington was wearing, as he engaged Napoleon in battle, was purchased at James Lock & Co., 6 St. James's Street. Lord Nelson shopped here for his hats too.
In the financial quarter of London there is an equestrian sculpture of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington at the Royal Exchange on Bank Junction in the City. The bronze statue is made from captured enemy cannon melted down after the Battle of Waterloo. He was present at the unveiling of his own statue on June 18, 1844. The sculptor, Francis Leggatt Chantrey, wasn't,  he died suddenly before it was completed and his studio assistant Henry Weekes finished it.

Gebhard von Blücher: the other victor at Waterloo
I have the habit of using my camera as a notebook, a picture, as they say, is worth a thousand words... anyway, in 2007, strolling in Berlin along the Unter_den Linden, I shot this picture of a statue, not knowing who it commemorated - it happens to be Prussian General Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher who led his army in alliance with Wellington at against Napoleon I at Waterloo.
Statue of Waterloo General Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher on Unter den Linden in Berlin
Photo: Pat Keenan
Since Wellington later admitted that the battle was "the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life", it probably was Blücher's alliance that presented the advantage.
Earlier on June 1815, before Waterloo, the Prussians suffered a serious defeat at Ligny during which Blücher was felled by a cavalry charge and lay trapped under his dead horse for a number of hours. His chief of staff pulled back the defeated army to regroup. Blücher, rescued by his aide-de-camp, fortified himself with a liberal helping of brandy, what remained, he used to bathe his wounds. Rejoining his defeated army he found that some favored a comlpete withdrawal but Blücher did not and convinced his superiors to send two Corps to join-up with Wellington at Waterloo. He led his army on this long march, reaching Waterloo late in the afternoon as the battle hung in the balance. His intervention had a decisive effect, sending a vanguard to draw off Napoleon's badly needed reserves, while his main army overpowered any remaining French resistance.

Puglia - provides the finest quality Olive Oil

For the very first time Pat Keenan shot some video footage
during a visit to Masseria Brancati, a typical Puglia farmhouse, in Ostuni.
Their olive grove dates back to Roman times.
Two to three thousand years old trees still provide
the finest quality Olive Oils.

Corrado Rodio owner and guide at Masseria Brancati, a typical Puglia farmhouse, in Ostuni (also known as The White City) shows us around the olive grove in the largest olive growing region in the world.
For six generations the Rodio family has produced extra virgin olive oil and now they also have opened the masseria (farmhouse) as a bed and breakfast accomodation. The original living quarters have been transformed into three accommodations, leaving the other structures and its original architectural features unaltered. In 1880 the old  underground olive mill was abandoned and is today a museum. Don Domenico Rodio the masseria’s owner at the time built a second building used up until the 1960s. Now the old building with its original stone mills are a museum and kept in perfect condition. You'll see it toward the end of the video. You can also see numerous old tools that were used during the production of olive oil over the centuries.
A little bit more than an hour away you can visit historic and interesting towns -  Otranto, Lecce, Gallipoli, Trani, Castel del Monte. Blue flagged sandy beaches are also nearby and in about two hours you can visit the famous rock dwellings of Matera, San Giovanni Rotondo.
Apart from the owner’s residence the masseria has an apartment and two mini apartments, which can be rented as self sufficient units or use can be made of the bed and breakfast service.
The Stanza Azzurra and Stanza Rosa rooms are very comfortable. Our masseria offers the perfect setting for guests that would like to enjoy the natural surroundings in total relaxation, taste the local specialities, our fresh farm eggs and sample the fine extra virgin olive oil which is produced and sold in the masseria (farmhouse). Guided tours, including a tasting of the olive oil, can be arranged.

Holiday World Show Dublin 2015 “Spain will lead the way in 2015”
At the Holiday World Show Dublin at the RDS Simmonscourt last week, no less than fourteen Spanish regions were represented. Every year that number grows in response to a seemingly insatiable Irish appetite for holidays “en España”. Two new Spanish regions were Valencia and Costa Calida.
The Irish Travel Agents Association members survey showed the overwhelming popularity of Spain in 2014, but also suggest no end to the love affair between Irish consumers and the many Spanish regions in 2015. In 2014 the Spanish Tourist Board announced that Spain welcomed almost 1.3 million visitors from Ireland.
ITAA Survey showed
66% of Irish travel agents reported that Spain was their most popular travel destination in 2014.
• Spain was also voted the ‘best value’ destination of 2014, receiving 41% of votes, followed by Portugal and Turkey, each receiving 18% of the votes.
• Looking to 2015, 55% of ITAA members expect Spain to be their most popular destination of the year, agents also anticipate that Portugal will remain popular.
• 2015 looks to be a good year for travel agents with none expecting their annual turnover to decrease, 35% are expecting turnover to remain the same and the remaining 65% expect an increase.
Roland Monsegu, CaminoWays.com, with Anu
from Santiago Turismo at Holiday World Show 2014
• The average anticipated increase in turnover is 8%.

Travel Health Tips and Checks
Whether traveling for fun, culture, adventure, to study or to help those in need, there are certain health issues to be aware of before you set off on your adventure!  The Tropical Medical Bureau have given us some of their top travel health tips and checks to help make your 2015 travels trouble free.
Backpacking
As backpackers tend to travel to multiple destinations, they generally require a more extensive vaccine programme. If you are backpacking you need to make sure you leave enough time prior to your departure to complete these vaccinations courses.
Older Travellers
With the right precautions, older people can still fulfill those travel resolutions! Determine your level of health and prepare for what issues may affect you on your trip.
Visit a Tropical Medical Bureau clinic or your local GP before you leave. You should also find out if your insurance policy will cover local medical care and take the time to properly label any medication you may need.
Volunteering
Helping those in need is an amazing way to spend 2015 but make sure you're prepared for the health risks that you may face. Confirm you are in good health and make sure all of your vaccines are up-to-date. Should you fall ill while volunteering, Tropical Medical Bureau have a 24/7 emergency phone line as well as an international network of clinics.
Studying abroad
Research the country you are visiting and make sure you have all recommended vaccinations. Although many students are on a budget, it's crucial to spend money on decent insect repellent and sun cream as insect bites and sunburn have the potential to ruin the experience.
Siobhan Grehan, Director of Nursing at Tropical Medical Bureau said, "Being correctly vaccinated and more aware of the main health risk factors at your destination can go a long way towards helping you stay healthy and well on your travels." She continued, "Having the back-up of a 24/7 urgent medical support service can also be life saving or at least lessen some of the more common causes of anxiety associated with illness overseas."
Tropical Medical Bureau have 20 clinics in Ireland.
