A new three-part series begins September 24, Long Shadow,  BBC2 N Ireland, 8.00pm. Historian and writer David Reynolds looks at at the legacy of the First World War and the rippling effects that continue through the last century and on to this one.
He begins, in this first part: Remembering and Understanding by contrasting British and German feelings and perceptions of what it might hold for each nation at the time - the British offered it as 'the war to end all wars'. However, the outbreak of the Second World War altered that perception - even then,  and it seemed as though that awful and disastrous conflict was hollow, and simply paved the way for more wars.

In the second part of Long Shadow: Ballots and Bullets,Wednesday, October 1, BBC2 N Ireland, 8.00pm. Historian David Reynolds looks at how the First World War lead to an age of what he calls:"turbulent mass democracy." Monarchies were toppled and revolution spawned. Much of Europe in the 1920s and 30s polarized into right and left camps engendering much fear and disquiet.      Leaders emerged with competing visions of people power. Britain came out feeling victorious and somewhat detached - the Labour Party and socialism assimilated into the political mainstream, the aristocracy reassessed their position and the monarchy had a make-over as the symbol of the country.

In the third and final part, Long Shadow, Us and Them, Wednesday, October 8, BBC2 N Ireland, 8.00pm., David Reynolds sums up the legacy of the First World War by examining the proliferation of nationalism all over Europe, that national identity takes on a stronger notion differentiating `us versus them'. He visits Belfast in Northern Ireland, Sudetenland in the Czech Republic and the Palace of Versailles in France to explore the drastically changed map of Europe in 1919, and looks at how the new states patched together after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire undermined Europe for much of the 20th century.

Spain celebrates
over 1 million Irish Visitors

Figures just released show that 1,074,000 Irish travelled to Spain this year
Over 1 million Irish travelled to Spain between January and September this year according to figures released today from the Spanish Statistical Institute and the Spanish Tourism Office.  Gonzalo Ceballos, Director of the Spanish Tourism office in Ireland, said that he wanted to thank the Irish public for making Spain the number one destination of choice for holidaymakers.

8.5% increase on 2013
While June and July remain the most popular months for travel the figures also show that 145,000 Irish residents travelled to Spain in September, an 8.5% increase on 2013.       The most popular destinations are the Canary Islands, Andalucía, Cataluña, Valencia and the Balearic Islands.  These five destinations account for 90% of Irish tourism to Spain.

Ireland and Spain
well connected with air travel
More Irish tourists holidayed in Spain than the combined total to France, Italy, Portugal and Germany combined.  Gonzalo Ceballos pointed to a number of factors for the extraordinary popularity of Spain's as a destination:  “Ireland and Spain are well connected through air travel with over 1.2 million seats sold by airlines so far this year.  Spain offers a broad choice to tourists either relaxing or on cultural and adventure travel, with 45 biosphere destinations and 44 world heritage sites making it a world leader in these categories.  Of course Spain also offers over 3,000 beaches and 664 blue flag awards marking it out as the number one country in the world for such facilities.  Irish tourists also value the fact that in Spain we have one of the lowest crime rates in Europe and an excellent healthcare system.  More than anything I think the welcoming nature of the people, the culture and relaxed atmosphere attracts and binds Irish and Spanish people and makes it a natural choice.”
In 2013, Spain accounted for 24% of all the nights spent abroad by Irish tourists and 21% of all Irish travel expenditure was spent on travel to Spain. This is more than France, Germany and Italy combined.  According to the CSO Spain is second only to the UK in terms of the number of trips taken by Irish visitors.

HASTINGS - a walk around the Old Town

HASTINGS
Turning a blind eye to the candy-floss, the amusements
and even the Battle, Pat Keenanenjoyed
a ramble around the Old Town and discovered
a wartime detective, witches, pirates, and two long dead cats

Photos & map: Pat Keenan
Old luggers and black wooden net huts on the Stade facing the East Hill Cliff

How do you like your cats… smoke dried, mummified or alive and purring? I wandered into the The Stag Inn (6) (www.shepherdneame.co.uk/pubs/hastings/stag-inn) at 14 All Saints' Street in Hastings and before a pint had even crossed my lips, there they were, the bodies of two 'mummified', or more accurately smoke dried cats. Had I called in before 1980 I would have been confronted by the grim sight of the two dead cats hanging from hooks over the bar. Now-a-days we are a lot more gentrified, they are nicely displayed in a case on the wall and they have even tossed in a dead mouse for good measure.
Map: HOLIDAYezine
The Stag Inn
They were originally discovered behind a blocked-up chimney when workers were doing some renovation work in the pub in the 1940s.
Locals tell me there may well be a simple explanation, the cats entered the chimney and were, simply overcome by smoke from the fire, or... were the sacrifice of a witch, which brings us to another thing about Hastings. They like to celebrate their ancestry of witches and pirates.
Now a jolly celebration but born of a dark and fearful past. Around the time The Stag first opened in 1547 Hastings suffered badly from the plague, the last outbreak being in 1597. Legend has it that the cats belonged to an alleged witch named Hannah Clarke who either lived here or frequented the place. She is said to have put the two cats up the chimney in 1665 and then sealed it with bricks in an attempt to ward off a plague by witchcraft.
One of the pirates I encountered at the Stag Inn
My pint of Kents Best, almost finished, a black cat strolled in and sat under my stool." Make sure that cat stays away from the fireplace" I quipped as the lady pulled by second bitter. "I only work here' she says. Being a nice sunny day and approaching lunchtime I retired to the beer garden behind, where surrounded by trellises of real hanging hops plants and… two more live cats, I enjoyed my "real English beef-burger"
The Cinque Port Arms
If I lived in Hastings the Cinque Port Arms(5) 105 All Saints Street, dating from the sixteenth century, would be my local - wood paneled walls, a small bar, a good mix of locals characters, a choice of ales and beer and a welcoming bar staff. I did, admittedly. stay longer than I intended. In order to achieve a balanced report I felt obliged to try several pints of pale ale- Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter (that would have been brewed just up the railway line at Harveys in Lewes), Fuller's ESB and Fuller's ESB (5.5%) and returned the following day, not as you might think for the 'hair of the dog' - actually, I felt very well and just popped in for a 'farewell to Hastings' pint or three.
In the Cinque Port Inn: the editor with some locals and one who was a long way from Tipperary
Titus Oates, the serial perjurer, who fabricated the infamous Popish Plot, a supposed Catholic / Jesuit conspiracy to kill King Charles II was born in Hastings and was baptised at the top of street here in All Saints Church (7) in 1649. His father was the rector at the time and he himself would become a chaplin here. Many were executed and died as the plot hysteria spread. In Ireland, Oliver Plunkett Archbishop of Armagh and the Jesuit Archbishop of Dublin, Peter Talbot were the main victims.
All Saints Church

The largest ever gathering of pirates
The Jolly Roger flies on so many flagpoles in Hastings, it might be mistaken for the towns official coat of arms. They are so hooked on their smuggling, pirating past they even took their place in the Guinness Book of Records with the largest ever gathering of pirates on Pelham Beach, Hastings, on July 22, 2012 when 14,231 shared an 'aarrgghh!' or two and a 'shiver me timbers' moment. and I'm told they are now planning a similar gathering of witches. Watch out cats.

George Street
And where better to 'shiver your timbers' than along scull & cross bone festooned George Street (14) (touristy alert - but never-the-less, good fun). The wall plaque says it was formally opened as pedestrianised in 1987 by 60's 'Carry-On' actor Bernard Bresslaw. I can't think of anyone better for a saucy-postcard seaside resort. It's an opportunity to shop, buy some souvenirs, enjoy a good coffee surrounded by book in the very quirky Hanushka Coffee House, 28 George Street or pop into Ye Olde Pump House(15) 64 George St (www.yeoldepumphouse.com) It looks and feels very old but isn't - dates all the way back to 1956. Almost opposite, equally old looking and covered in scull and cross bones flags, the Black Pearl Restaurant ‪9 George Street‬. (www.blackpearlrestaurant.co.uk) serves good fish and chips. The Anchor Inn 13 George Street (www.shepherdneame.co.uk/pubs/hastings/anchor-innis claimed to be the second oldest pub in Hastings. Legend has it that the bar is haunted by a ghost. In olden times it was also used as a court of law and the ghost is that of a man who was sentenced to death, here, by hanging. Cheers.

High Street
The other shopping street is the adjacent High Street where there are more shops including a cluster of antique and old print shops and pubs: The Jenny Lind Free House and Hotel, (10) at 69 High Street (http://jennylindhastings.co.uk), probably not my kind of pub - live entertainment, a little impersonal, but that's just me - others will love it. It has a big central bar that serves two rooms, has a good range of beers and an ideal central location for a stay in the Old Town. Originally built around 1850 on the site of an older pub The Bell, and was named after "The Swedish Nightingale" Jenny Lind who lived in Hastings in the 1800s.The original pub was bombed during WW2 May 23 1943. It became famous in 1959 when the British heavyweight boxing champion Don Cockell became the landlord.
Ten to one underdog Cockell, in 1955, took on the famous Rocky Marciano for the world heavyweight title at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, The first three rounds the fight were kind of even, but as it progressed Cockell was taking more and more punishment and went down twice for for counts of eight and seven. Marciano won with a technical knockout in round nine.
Further along there is First In Last Out (8) 14-15 High Street, was recommended to me by locals - "a proper pub, no jute-box, no fruit machines" and Duke Of Wellington (9) 28 High Street,

Foyle's War
The old narrow streets of Hastings Old Town have taken on a new fame as the setting for ITV/UTV's Foyle's War, a Second World War detective drama. I walked up High Street in the footsteps of Police Inspector Christopher Foyle, played by Michael Kitchen, and up Swan Terrace, past St Clements Church (12) to 31 Croft Road (13), in Foyle's War it is '31 Steep Street' and it is where Inspector Foyle lives. In the series we often see Foyle and his driver Samantha "Sam" Stewart, played by Honeysuckle Weeks, driving to his house up Swan Terrace, past St Clements. This small narrow street was, in the real war, the site of Hastings’ worst wartime disaster in 1943 when the old Swan Inn got a direct bomb hit, with the loss of 16 lives. A memorial garden now marks the site.
Foyle's house: Croft Street
The Stade (18) features in a number of episodes: at least one murder, a marriage proposal, a reenactment of the Dunkirk evacuation and, in one episode, a traditional fishing boat is hauled onto the shingle by manpower - now-a-days they use power winches.

Fish and Chips
But for the very best fish and chips in Hastings I was directed to Blue Dolphin Fish Bar (11) 61B High Street, easy to recognise, it's the place with the great queue outside for take-a-ways. The day before I tried The Mermaid(2)  2 Rock-a-Nore Road, almost opposite the Jarwood Gallery. The fish and batter was excellent but the chips didn't impress, maybe just an off-day. The staff here were the best, pleasant, efficient and helpful.

Rock-a-Nore Road
The Jerwood Gallery(1) next to the fishing beach at the start of Rock-a-Nore Road contains a collection of art by great British artists with a particular focus on the period between the First World War and the 1960s - works by Sir Stanley Spencer, LS Lowry, Walter Sickert and Augustus John. The collection, still expanding, fills in with modern works by Alan Davie, Maggie Hambling and Jeffery Camp. (www.jerwoodgallery.org)
Continue along the Rock-a-Nore Road, on the left the The East Hill cliffs up toward the castle and on the right, the tall unique black wooden sheds, rows of them line the beach called The Stade - staid is an old Saxon term meaning landing place.
This shingle beach has been used for beaching boats for more than a thousand years and contains, to this day, the largest fleet of beach-launched fishing boats in Europe. Because they are hauled from the sea after each trip, they are smaller from stem to stern than most fishing vessels at about ten metres. They carry small amounts of gear and never travel more than a few miles from shore.
The East Hill Cliff funicular railway
The East Hill Cliff Funicular Railway(3) leads to Hastings Country Park and provides a fine overview Hastings, the Old Town and the beach. The West Hill Cliff Railway from George Street, gives access to Hastings Castle and the Smugglers Adventure in St. Clements Caves.
Fisherman's Museum Rock-a-Nore Road
At the Fisherman's Museum(4) in the former fisherman's church, (St Nicholas' Church) (www.hastingsfish.co.uk/museum.htm) on Rock-a-Nore Road by the Stade, is almost filled by The Enterprise, one of the last of the luggers (sailing fishing boats) and all around it a clutter of nets, ropes, models of boats, a floating tub, photos, drawings, paintings, lamps and fishermen's gear, but what caught my eye was one particular watercolor painting of a submarine aground on a beach. The submarine was the World War 1 SM U-118 of the Imperial German Navy that prowled the Atlantic off the Irish coast during the First Battle of the Atlantic and the beach was Hastings in 1919. It was being towed through the English Channel towards France to be broken up for scrap but the tow cable snapped in a storm and she ran aground on the beach at Hastings directly in front of the Queens Hotel (16) (now the Queens Appartments). Her last notch, incidentally, was the British tanker Arca, sunk with a loss of 52 lives, just off Tory Island, Co. Donegal.

What's new in Italy ? The Italian National Tourist Board have provided us
with a list of some recent openings of hotelsrestaurants
some re-openings and new air connections
TRAVELSTYLE: Italy

I have a rule when traveling - always trade up. It's hard to understand people who cheerfully swap the comfort of their own home to holiday in a place less comfortable or pay good money in a restaurant for food that isn't as good as something you might rustle up in your own kitchen. Someone once gave me some wine shopping advise. If you are where wine is cheap - never buy cheap. At least spend what you might expect the price of a decent wine at home. Do this and you should get something a bit more special.
I know people who, without fail or without thinking, head for the same old bargain basement or even to the exact same stores that we have at home. You're away from home - try somewhere different and with some contrast, perhaps style and this does not necessarily rule out some real bargains at local markets. And especially true in Italy, if style and elegant design rule anywhere, it rules here.
Let's look at what's new. Let me also add my proviso that I have not yet personally checked out these places but I've added some links to their web pages for more information.

Winter City Breaks in Spain
There's more to Andalusia than the Costas:
city breaks, Saville, Córdoba, Málaga
and an option to also visit
Aznalcázar, Écija, Huelva and Antequera

An adaptation (with extra material and photos} of an article
by Pat Keenan that appeared in Senior Times magazine earlier this year

Photos and map: Pat Keenan
Saville Cathedral: the final resting place of Christopher Columbus, or is it?
Every summer we migrate to the South of Spain in our thousands, we scatter along the Costa del Sol, Torremolinos, Estapona, Fuengirola, Marbella, as far as Gibraltar. We spread gallons of sun lotions over acres of white skin, eat tapas, drink sangria, beer and cold soup, our plumage turns red and brown, we stamp our feet on cool tiles in imitation of the local species and chant "olé olé olé", and then, return home for the winter. We've been to Andalusia and seen the beaches . It must be the most visited yet least know regions of Spain.
In the winter months let's see what more Andalusia will offer.  For starters, it's always warmer and yet cool enough to enjoy glorious city breaks. On our travels we arrived in Seville, drove to Córdoba and on to Málaga, from there we flew home.  This involves car hire and some driving, which gives the added advantage of adding some extra visits to take in some of the smaller nearby towns such as  Aznalcázar, Écija, Huelva and Antequera.  You can, of course, do individual city breaks, and don't worry there is plenty to do and see in any one of these cities.

Seville
Why should you go
Saville is one of Spain's most flamboyant cities with with a patchwork of architecture, flamenco dancing and a mishmash of cultural influences pasted down by Celts, Romans,Christians, Moslems, Moors and from Spain's great colonial era including the discovery of America. See these influences and how they reflect the city's lifestyles.

Cathedral and La Giralda tower
The Cathedral, one of the largest in Christendom has the final resting place of Christopher Columbus, or has it? It's even more complicated than the following shortish résumé. After his death in 1506 he had a quite a number of burials first in Spain then across the Atlantic again and buried in the cathedral of Santo Domingo in Hispaniola, now the Dominican Republic. Two centuries pass, and Spain lose Hispanola to the French, dug him upset again (or did they?) , took him to Havana, Cuba and found a new resting place for him.  Another century past and Cuba became a free self governing country. The Spanish left and shipped Columbus back to Spain that is where we find him today the cathedral in Saville.
Christopher Columbus' Tomb, Saville Cathedral
But there is counter claims that he is still in the Dominican Republic, that the wrong body, that of his son, Diego, was originally moved in the first place. The Dominicans refuse to acknowledge recent positive DNA test done on the Spanish bones but refuse to allow a test to be done on theirs. Let's rest our case there for the moment and head for the the tower, it's a long climb, but offers a magnificent view of the city.

Alcázar Palace and Old City
The royal Mudéjar palace known as the Alcazar has beautiful gardens and the Old City offers an opportunity to wander the narrow streets of the Santa Cruz, the former Jewish quarter, with its decorated facades, flowered balconies and hidden patios. Enjoy this the most picturesque and delightful part of the city, with narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, where you can take it easy, drink a coffee, a glass of wine or three, sample some tapas and simply watch the world go by- magic.
Horse and trap: Puerta de JerezSquare, Seville
Triana
Across the Triana bridge over the large Guadalquívir River you'll find the popular and unique quarter called Triana, sometimes called 'the independent republic of Triana', more narrow streets and a renowned refuge for sailors, bullfighters and flamenco artists. In the old days gypsies had to live here as they weren't allowed inside the main city walls. Then there was the Inquisition - a dark chapter in Seville's history at at the Castillo San Jorge museum - easy to miss - it’s tucked away by the north tower of the Triana bridge and next to the exceptional local food market.
On your stroll also include Casa de Pilatos, Torre del Oro, the Town Hall, Archive of the Indies (where the historical records of the American colonies are kept), the Fine Arts Museum (the second largest art gallery after the Prado in Madrid)

Metropol Parasol
Hard to miss this new towering wood lattice construction, the world's largest. Locals call it Las Setas (mushrooms) and other names too, Gaping upwards it didn't take long before I heard an angry barrage of Spanish. I thought I had somehow offended someone until another passer-by told me the anger was directed at the wooden mushroom. I quite liked it, but silently.
Metropol Parasol: hard to miss
Beneath, it houses the Antiquarium an archaeological museum containing Roman ruins, found when a car park was being constructed. There's a market and a high walkway offering panoramic views of the city and of the cathedral and the Cartuja Monastry.
Seville: shopping

Córdoba
Why should you go
Cordoba, was the capital of Muslim Andalucia from 756 to 1031 and so it is an opportunity to explore and see glimpses of what was Islamic Spain. At that time Cordoba would have been a serious rival to the other great centres of the Muslim empire, up there with Baghdad and Damascus. During that period people from across the Arab world flocked here - poets, musicians, artists and they brought with them to Europe, all sorts of new expertise in cookery, fashion, even hairdressing.
It was also a time when Jews and Arabs lived in harmony, for example Cordoba was the birthplace of two of the greatest figures of medieval thought: two philosophers, one Jewish - Maimonides and the other Islamic - Averroes, both were born in Cordoba, lived here where they freely shared shared their theories and ideas.
Córdoba Mosque (Mezquita): once one of the eminent mosques in the Islamic world
Córdoba Mosque (Mezquita)
The Cathedral may be Christian, but once inside, it doesn't at all feel like a Christian building. With its forest of red and white candy-striped arches, it was once one of the eminent mosques in the Islamic world exhibiting features and an architectural aspect, similar to the Great Mosque of Demascus. Spanish Muslims have lobbied to pray here. However, Spanish church authorities and the Vatican oppose the idea.
Córdoba Mosque (Mezquita)

Jewish Quarter or Juderia
A tangle of narrow streets and alleys, a small Synagogue, the Casa de Sefarad, a small museum devoted to the the Sephardic-Judaic tradition in Spain and the Casa Andalusi, a 12th-century house furnished with objects from Córdoba’s medieval Islamic past and a Roman mosaic thrown in. And of course, many places to stop for wine and tapas. A place to visit.

Lunch
Over thirty years ago Rafael Carrillo and his wife, Mari, opened El Churrasco Restaurante in Judería, the Jewish quarter of Córdoba, specializing in grilled meats (churrasqueadas) over Spanish oak charcoal. - all prepared in view of the customers. But the menu is now  wide-ranging with fish, seafood, vegetables -  locally sourced and seasonal. I enjoyed the churrasco, a barbecued pork fillet with a in a spicy tomato-based Arabian sauce. Oddly while the soup is cold (gazpacho blanco de piñones - made with pine nuts), the ice cream is fried !

Málaga
Originally named "Malaka" - nobody seems quite sure why but most likely it was named after a deity worshipped by the Phoenician traders and fishermen who established the place sometime in the seventh century B.C.  Anyway, the fact is that Malaga is one of the oldest cities in western Europe and for that reason alone is worth a visit. Even Homer, the Greek poet (not Simpson), wrote of it's mild climate "and the gentle maritime Zephyrs that sweetly refresh."
Bus Tours
In Malaga the official tour bus is easy to spot since it is the only red, topless, double decker  you are likely to see in the city. Your €15 ticket is valid for 24 hours any you can hop on or off at any of the 12 stops, starting at the Main Bus Station linking the main Post Office building (opposite El Corte Ingles ) with the Port, Malagueta Beach, the Bullring, Gibralfaro Castle, Picasso’s birthplace, the Alcazaba and the Cathedral.
The ticket also allows you to take another bus from the Main Bus Station and gain free entrance to the Botanical Gardens Finca la Concepcion on the north side of the city.(www.malagatours.net)

Castillo de Gibralfaro
On a hill overlooking Málaga and the seafront, the ruins of Castillo de Gibralfaro, an ancient Moorish fortress, offer terrific photo opportunities. Incidentally a nice place for a relaxing al fresco lunch is the terrace of the Parador hotel on the hill.
The castle was the site of a three month stand off by the citizens of Malaga with the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. The siege ended when hunger led to the citizens' capitulation. Ferdinand occupied the site while Isabella took up residence in the town. What remains today are the still solid defensive walls which rise majestically over the city amid dense woods of pine and eucalyptus

Pablo Picasso.
Today's Malaga has developed a discernible sense of pride that can be largely attributed to Pablo Picasso. Picasso was born  here in Malaga in 1881 and spent most of his childhood in the city. But he grew to detest the dictatorship of Generalíssimo Franco and resolved never to set foot in Spain during his rule. In reciprocation, Franco declared Picasso persona non grata and banned his work as "degenerate art."
Now, the 20th century’s most famous artist has been reclaimed as Málaga’s favorite son. The airport and the main beachfront avenue have been renamed for Picasso, and the Museo Picasso Málaga, Palacio de Buenavista, San Agustín 8. (www.museopicassomalaga.org), housing a fine collection of his works,  has become the centerpiece of  a prosperous new surge in the city's tourism. Fundación Pablo Ruiz Picasso y Museu Casa Natal (Picasso’s birthplace), Plaza de la Merced 15, (www.fundacionpicasso.es) is also open to the public.
Malaga´s unfinished cathedral
Malaga´s unfinished cathedral
Malaga´s unfinished cathedral built between 1528 & 1782 was partly built on the site of a former mosque. Unfinished because the plan was for two towers but lack of money due to funds been redirected to help the American Revolutionaries in their fight with the British, resulted in the completion of only one, thus giving rise to the name 'La Manquita', loosely translated as "one armed woman". The city's residents are quite proud of their unfinished masterpiece and there are no plans to ever finish that second tower. )

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is, of course, a controversial topic and the Spanish now also appear to be divided on the issue. Of course, you don't have to, but as I happened to be staying in Hotel MS Maestranza whose rooftop spa and solarium actually overlooked the bullfighting going on in the Plaza de Torres 'La Malagueta' alongside, I took a peek.  The ring also houses a bullfighting museum, Museo Taurino Antonio Ordonez. Outside the bullring there is a statue depicting the great bullfighter Ordóñez who became the inspiration for Pedro Romero, the matador in Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises. If interested, Spain´s bullfighting season, lasts from April to October.
Antonio Ordonez: the inspiration for Hemingway's Pedro Romero in 'The Sun Also Rises'
Málaga's Cafe Central: as good a way to kick start the day as any
Coffee, Chocolate and Churros
Churros con chocolate
Café Central, Plaza de la Constitución, (www.cafecentralmalaga.com) is the oldest coffee bar in Malaga and as good a way to kick start the day as any. In 1940 one D. Jose Prado, the proprietor invented a formula for ordering a coffee to suit all tastes starting with 'solo' (no milk) through 8 stages to 'no me lo ponga' (which is mostly milk).
Or you can slow start the day, with something the Spanish brought back from the New World over 500 years ago -chocolate - in the form of 'Churros con chocolate.' Churros" are fritters, doughnuts but  moulded into  long straight or slightly curled lengths, eaten while warm sprinkled with sugar or honey and dunked in a cup of hot chocolate made so thick that you can stand your churro in it!

Grilled sardines on the beach
Ok, so we came to see the city but who can resist grilled sardines on the beach? Head east along the coastal road from Malaga and just beyond the Baños del Carmen you'll  the small seaside promenade of Pedregalejo. The beach is popular with locals but the fresh seafood is the big attraction for outsiders.  Most of the restaurants overlook the beach and have been here for over twenty years.
We had lunch at Restaurante Maricuchi. (Paseo Marítimo del Pedregal, 14 - 29017 Málaga. Tel. +34 952 29 04 12) I feasted on fried anchovies ("boquerones fritos"), fried squid ("calamaritos") and just-caught sardines skewered on a stick grilled over a wood fire), small clams cooked in white wine ("coquinas"). All washed down with jugs of refreshing sangria. Delicious!
Miguelita el Curinoso Restaurant: grilled sardines

2015 Tickets
Rory McIlroy: world number one
Irish golf fans would do well to book early for next year’s Irish Open at Royal County Down, hosted for the first time by world number one Rory McIlroy’s very own charitable foundation.  Last time, in 2012, the Irish Open held in Northern Ireland became the first European Tour event to totally sell out in advance.
Now the race is on again for coveted tickets and insiders are quietly but confidently predicting the best Irish Open ever. The prestigious venue will be the famous links of Royal County Down, listed among the world’s best golf courses, and with The Rory Foundation on board as official tournament host, it is expected that the world number one will strengthen an already impressive Irish Open line-up including some of the leading players from both the European and US PGA.
The famous links of Royal County Down
Keen that Irish golf fans get a chance to enjoy another momentous event, which takes place from May 28 to May 31, 2015, the organizers have added an incentive to book early with tickets at just £25 when booked by December 31, 2014 - that's a saving of £10. After that the normal gate price will be £35 from January 1, 2015.  Ticket holders will be able to leave and re-enter the venue.
And families will be delighted to hear that kids under the age of 16 will be admitted FREE as long as they are accompanied by an adult (up to four children are allowed with one paying adult).
NITB’s Chief Operating Officer Kathryn Thomson speaking in Dublin this week: "We are thrilled at the prospect of Royal County Down hosting the 2015 Irish Open, we are expecting another historic event come next May and already, a sizeable number of tickets have been sold".

DH Lawrence
in Taos New Mexico
and the Elgin Marbles
A tale of looting, banned books, "indecent" paintings
and a plan to return the Elgin Marbles to Greece.
Pat Keenan takes us from the Acropolis in Athens,
to police raids in London and to an encounter with Saki Karayas
at the La Fonda Hotel in Taos, New Mexico.
Saki Karayas: "…return of the Elgin Marbles to Athens"                                          Watercolour by Pat Keenan

 The 7th Earl of Elgin
A statue of the headless Greek river-god Ilissos has recently been loaned to the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg by the British Museum in London, and it immediately sparked off a furious diplomatic response from Greece. The Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras described the decision to loan the sculpture as "a provocation to the Greek people." The statue in question is from the controversial Elgin Marbles, a collection of classical Greek sculptures originally part of the Acropolis in Athens. The British say they were 'acquired.' The Greeks say they were 'looted'
The 7th Earl of Elgin Thomas Bruce in 1801, while serving as the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in Athens, removed the marbles from the Acropolis and gifted them to the British Museum. He claimed to have obtained permission from the Ottomans but the permission document somehow  went missing - conveniently, say the Greeks.
Bear with me while I deviate.

"Frankly Disgusting and Indecent"
In June 1929 police raided the Warren Gallery in London and confiscated thirteen "indecent" paintings. They were taken to the Marlborough Street Police Station, to await their fate at the descretion the courts. The Observer newspaper at the time called them "frankly disgusting", the Daily Express described the exhibition as "ugly,""repellent,""frankly indecent" and warned that "the subjects of some of them will compel most spectators to recoil in horror." One of the paintings they denounced showed a "hideous bearded man holding a fair-haired woman in his lascivious grip."
Saki's office at the La Fonda Hotel Taos                                                       Photo Pat Keenan

The artist was none other than DH Lawrence better known as a writer and author of Lady Chatterley's Lover (itself banned in Britain a year earlier - Ireland, of course, followed suit in 1932)
The seized paintings, if found indecent, would, most likely be disposed by fire. Instead after appeals from Lawrence they were returned to him on condition that he would take them out of the country and promise that they never be shown in England again. At the time he was residing, mostly for for health reasons, in dry desert air of Taos, New Mexico in the United States

Forbidden Art, Taos, New Mexico
In 1994 I found myself in Taos New Mexico outside the Hotel La Fonda where nine of the deported paintings ended up. The hotel, mindful of erotic content, charged $1 for a private viewing of the "D. H. Lawrence Forbidden Art" collection in Saki Karayas, the hotel owner's extremely cluttered office. Saki, born in New York of Greek immigrants, warmly welcomed me in and although it was sometime in the afternoon he was still in his dressing gown. I was told later that he never ever got up before noon.
Part of the Forbidden Art Collection                                                       Photo Pat Keenan
He told me of his passion for Lawrence as painter and for his literary works he showed me several first editions
The office was obviously the habitat of a very amusing and eccentric man, his shoe collection, rivaling that of Imelda Marcos, lined in a continuous row all around the office skirting boards. The walls were totally covered, a clutter of the forbidden art and a wide-ranging assortment of other paintings, any space left was filled by framed photos and mementoes.
www.lafondataos.com/hotelshistory.html
"Return the Elgin Marbles to Athens"
Saki would not say what he paid for the paintings but he knew what he wanted for their return. He also knew that the moral climate had changed in Britain, that the DH Lawrence Centre at Nottingham University had urged that the National Heritage fund be used to bring them back to Nottingham. They had £4m. in mind, Saki suggested to me a figure of £7m. and… with a big sideways grin: "… the return of the Elgin Marbles to Athens".
I'm not all that sure if he ever met Lawrence, I stupidly forgot to ask. Saki certainly was well acquainted with "the Lawrence women' as he put it. In fact I gathered that Saki had acquired a reputation around Taos circles as quiet the ladies man earning him the title "Don Juan of Taos"
His circle of ladies included Lawrence's wife, Frieda von Richtofen, a cousin of the Red Baron, the famous WW1 German flying fighter ace; Mabel Dodge Luhan, a wealthy American patron of the Taos art colony; Lady Dorothy Brett, a  painter with an aristocratic British pedigrees who moved to Taos at the invitation of Lawrence; Millicent Rogers, art collector and heiress to Standard Oil Company fortune and the important artist, Georgia O'Keefe, recognized as the Mother of American Modernism who was a immence influence on Lawrence as painter.
Frieda Lawrence died in 1956 and her estate, which included the Lawrence paintings, passed on to her husband Angelino Ravagli. A few months later Angelino sold them to Saki. Saki died in 1996, just two years after our meeting. Since he never married, he left his hotel and the paintings to his good friend, George Sahd.

Hacienda del Sol: snug and warm in 1994                                                         Photo Pat Keenan
In 1994 I stayed at Hacienda del Sol a luxury Bed and Breakfast with breathtaking views of Taos Mountain and it is still there today just a mile north of the Taos Historic Plaza and the indecent paintings of DH Lawrence. Oh, and I do remember that my beautiful adobe styled room included access to relax at night in the outdoor Hot Tub under the stars, surrounded by snow, yes snow, and the Taos Mountains.

The Azores -named the first Global Sustainable Destination
The first ever ‘Global Sustainable Destinations Top 100’ study named the volcanic archipelago of the Azores, the world’s most sustainable tourism destination in 2014.

The Azores makes effective use of renewable energy, and its main industries include agriculture, dairy farming, livestock ranching, fishing, and tourism. Only around 5% of the Azores’ ground is urbanized, and the number of protected areas (which include UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO European Geoparks) is continually rising, thanks to the importance placed on the environment in schools.
Quality Coast, the largest international certification programme for sustainable tourism destinations also named the Azores the top sustainable tourism destination of 2014, beating more than 1,000 other island and coastal destinations to the top spot and making the islands the first and only destination to achieve the Quality Coast Platinum Award.
So in 1915 the environmentally-conscious traveller will find wildlife options including whale and dolphin watching, swimming with wild dolphins and blue sharks, scuba diving for pelagic fish and marine turtles, bird watching, big game fishing and horse riding. And all the usual activities: hiking and cycling volcanic trails, canyoning, kayaking, rock climbing, paragliding, surfing, golf and sailing.
Responsible Travel has also launched a two-minute guide on the Azores for those looking to holiday in the archipelago in 2015. Downloaded at www.responsibletravel.com/holidays/azores/travel-guide

If we turn our back on wildlife- tourism, we make it easier for poachers
Jonathan Scott, zoologist, wildlife photographer, conservationist and TV presenter of the BBC’s Big Cat Diary and Big Cat Live series has lived in Kenya for nearly 40 years. He is passionate about the role tourism to Kenya plays in saving that country’s endangered wildlife.
"Kenyans have got to be the friendliest and most welcoming people on earth" he says "if I had only one day left in my life, I’d spend it in the Maasai Mara with my wife Angie. There is nowhere else like it."

He continued: "Without tourism we will not be able to protect the best of our wildlife areas. There are a lot of people in Kenya desperate for land to settle on. For the moment, the government has been able to protect amazing wildlife places like Tsavo, the Maasai Mara, Samburu and Amboseli, because people can see the financial benefits. But as the human population continues to expand there will always be pressure on the land. Tourism is one of Kenya’s biggest industries along with the exportation of tea, coffee and cut flowers. We are always lobbying to ensure that more of the money from tourism reaches the pockets of the local communities – that is the best way to protect wild places".
He says tourism makes it harder for the poachers "The benefit of tourists visiting Kenya is that it is much harder for poachers to target the country’s national parks. There are more eyes and ears and telephoto lenses on the ground – and the money from visitors’ park fees helps to pay the costs of protecting our wildlife. But it is a constant battle and we have to be vigilant. You only have to look at what happened in the past to see how important tourism is to conservation.

Jonathan reminds us: "When Tanzania closed its border with Kenya from 1977 to 1983, the number of visitors to the Serengeti dropped from 70,000 a year to around 10,000. The loss in revenue caused a 60% decline in anti-poaching patrols; there just wasn’t enough money to ensure that the rangers had the equipment they needed, or the vehicles and fuel to administer the anti-poaching effort. The result? The rhinos disappeared from the Serengeti, the elephant numbers dropped severely and meat poaching skyrocketed".
Be aware and read the travel advisories carefully and do some research. Jonathan says "Don’t interpret a warning against visiting Mombasa Island as a warning against visiting the whole country – or against visiting the Kenya coast. I’m not saying ignore travel advisories – but take the time to read, listen and then make up your own mind as to where to go. If you are worried, talk to your tour operator. Most are reputable companies and members of KATO, the Kenya Association of Tour Operators. They pay their dues and are regulated by the industry. Believe me, they’re not going to send you to places that are dangerous. They are going to do everything they can to try and ensure your safety".

Tradition says that during the first Crusade of 1096 the Florentine knight Pazzo de 'Pazzi was the first man who planted the banner of the Cross on battlements of Jerusalem and as a gift he received some fragments of the Holy Sepulchre. Upon his return to Florence the stones were used to start the Sacred Fire of Holy Saturday, and were paraded through the city as homage to it in a richly decorated chariot. Nowadays, on Easter Sunday a large wagon is pulled by white oxen in a procession in the streets of the centre of Florence to the front of the cathedral.
FESTA DEI CERI (RACE OF THE CANDLES)
Gubbio May 15, 2015
The Festa Dei Ceri is one of the oldest, if not the oldest Italian folklore display The festival is a solemn act of devotion on the part of the Eugubini towards their Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini which started in 1160, the year of his death. Since then, every 15 May, the eve of the day of mourning, the devotional offering to the patron Saint is a fixed appointment for the people of Gubbio who take part in a great mystical procession, carrying candles all around the town and up Mount Ingino (where since 11 September 1194 the body of Saint Ubaldo lies, in the church which bears his name). www.ceri.it

PALIO DEL NIBALLO
Faenza, Emilia Romagna, June 28, 2015
Seeing the Palio del Niballo is like living and enjoying a day in 14th-century Faenza. Flag-wavers, knights, and drummers dressed in the colours of the town's five contending “rioni” (i.e. quarters) - White, Yellow, Black, Red and Green - flood the most charming parts of the old town centre, accompanied by the pounding of drums. The palio consists in hitting a revolving dummy with a spear. The dummy is fashioned as a Saracen
warrior (called the “Niballo”) and the idea is to get your horse to run past faster than the Niballo turns. In June, before the palio, the rioni warm up with flag-waving and music competitions and the Bigorda d'Oro (a palio for younger racers). www.paliodifaenza.it

www.pisaunicaterra.it/en/villages-and-cities-of-art/pisa-en.html
On the occasion of the Feast of San Ranieri, Patron Saint of Pisa, celebrated annually on 16-17 June, the enchantment of the illuminations of Saint Ranieri is renewed on the streets running along the river Arno (the so-called Lungarni). In fact, following the ancient tradition the Pisans celebrate their Patron Saint on the following day with the historical Regatta of San Ranieri (Palio). There are more than a hundred thousand wax candles which at every edition are meticulously set in smooth and white glasses and fixed then onto wooden white-painted frames, modelled in such a way as to highlight the outline of the palaces, of the bridges, of the churches and of the towers reflecting the river. www.pisaunicaterra.it/en/villages-and-cities-of-art/pisa-en.html

On July 2 and August 16 the long afternoon begins in the heart of each contrada with the blessing of the horses, followed by the historical parade to the piazza. Finally, there is the race itself: the
victorious contrada bears the banner triumphantly to the Provenzano Basilica for the “te deum” thanksgiving to the Madonna (June 2) or to the Madonna Assunta (August 16). www.comune.siena.it

Two men, the “pushers”, roll the barrels along the competition route, winding up through the evocative streets of the old town centre of Montepulciano to the Cathedral churchyard in the Piazza Grande. In the days leading up to the race Montepulciano celebrates the traditional Candle Procession, with a parade though the beautiful city streets in period costume, illuminated only by torchlight. www.braviodellebotti.com

Holiday World Show Dublin 2015 “Spain will lead the way in 2015”
At the Holiday World Show Dublin at the RDS Simmonscourt last week, no less than fourteen Spanish regions were represented. Every year that number grows in response to a seemingly insatiable Irish appetite for holidays “en España”. Two new Spanish regions were Valencia and Costa Calida.
The Irish Travel Agents Association members survey showed the overwhelming popularity of Spain in 2014, but also suggest no end to the love affair between Irish consumers and the many Spanish regions in 2015. In 2014 the Spanish Tourist Board announced that Spain welcomed almost 1.3 million visitors from Ireland.
ITAA Survey showed
66% of Irish travel agents reported that Spain was their most popular travel destination in 2014.
• Spain was also voted the ‘best value’ destination of 2014, receiving 41% of votes, followed by Portugal and Turkey, each receiving 18% of the votes.
• Looking to 2015, 55% of ITAA members expect Spain to be their most popular destination of the year, agents also anticipate that Portugal will remain popular.
• 2015 looks to be a good year for travel agents with none expecting their annual turnover to decrease, 35% are expecting turnover to remain the same and the remaining 65% expect an increase.
Roland Monsegu, CaminoWays.com, with Anu
from Santiago Turismo at Holiday World Show 2014
• The average anticipated increase in turnover is 8%.

Travel Health Tips and Checks
Whether traveling for fun, culture, adventure, to study or to help those in need, there are certain health issues to be aware of before you set off on your adventure!  The Tropical Medical Bureau have given us some of their top travel health tips and checks to help make your 2015 travels trouble free.
Backpacking
As backpackers tend to travel to multiple destinations, they generally require a more extensive vaccine programme. If you are backpacking you need to make sure you leave enough time prior to your departure to complete these vaccinations courses.
Older Travellers
With the right precautions, older people can still fulfill those travel resolutions! Determine your level of health and prepare for what issues may affect you on your trip.
Visit a Tropical Medical Bureau clinic or your local GP before you leave. You should also find out if your insurance policy will cover local medical care and take the time to properly label any medication you may need.
Volunteering
Helping those in need is an amazing way to spend 2015 but make sure you're prepared for the health risks that you may face. Confirm you are in good health and make sure all of your vaccines are up-to-date. Should you fall ill while volunteering, Tropical Medical Bureau have a 24/7 emergency phone line as well as an international network of clinics.
Studying abroad
Research the country you are visiting and make sure you have all recommended vaccinations. Although many students are on a budget, it's crucial to spend money on decent insect repellent and sun cream as insect bites and sunburn have the potential to ruin the experience.
Siobhan Grehan, Director of Nursing at Tropical Medical Bureau said, "Being correctly vaccinated and more aware of the main health risk factors at your destination can go a long way towards helping you stay healthy and well on your travels." She continued, "Having the back-up of a 24/7 urgent medical support service can also be life saving or at least lessen some of the more common causes of anxiety associated with illness overseas."
Tropical Medical Bureau have 20 clinics in Ireland.

Martin McCrossan
1963 - 2015
A picture I tool of Martin McCrossan proudly holding a
City of Derry Crystal souvenir celebrating the Peace Bridge
which spans the River Foyle and over 400 years of political division
I was greatly shocked and saddened with the news last week that the man they called "Mr. Derry" had died. Martin McCrossan was well known all over Ireland and indeed throughout the world by people he guided around his beloved city. Anyone privileged enough to have met him will have noted not just his unique treasure of local history but also his joy in recent times that that once troubled city was uniting and repairing.
And I know that that process was enormously helped by Martin and others with innumerable behind the scene meetings across all the policical and religious divides.  His tours never shied from confronting the truth and evenhandedly told of struggles comprising still raw history, but did so, fairly and evenhandedly. Many times we walked along the walls, once a symbol of a divided city, and we walked across the Peace Bridge, now a symbol of a city uniting and prospering.
"Rest in Peace" is a term so appropriate and fitting for Martin.

Top 5 French Springtime Destinations
Atout France have sent us their top getaway destinations for springtime
1 Lake Annecy

Lake Annecy is considered the cleanest and purest lake in Europe and is a wonderful place to visit for outdoor activities. From windsurfing and diving to cycling and skiing, there is always plenty to do in and around the lake. The town of Annecy is referred to as the "Venice of the Alps" due to the pretty canals that wind their way through it. These canals are a sight to behold during spring.
2 Val Thorens
Although many may think that skiing is primarily a winter activity, it is also a great activity to do during the spring. During spring, the days are getting longer meaning the ski lifts are open later. It's also a great time to teach young children to ski as the snow is softer thanks to the warmer temperatures. Val Thorens is one of France's most popular ski resorts and has plenty of great après-ski activities for all of the family to enjoy.
3 Normandy
This region has pleasant weather all-year-round but visiting in spring means that you'll miss the busy summer crowds. There are also a number of exciting festivals taking place in Normandy during this time of year such as the Tulip festival, which takes place during April in the grounds of the beautiful Château de Vendeuvre, and Europe's oldest international magic festival, which takes place from the 11th-26th of April in Seine Maritime.
4 Sainte Maxime

This charming coastal city benefits from beautiful weather during every season but spring is a great time to visit as the area is far less busy. This means you can enjoy the 6km of sandy beaches in peace. As well as beaches, visitors will also discover numerous biking and hiking trails that overlook the picturesque bay of Saint Tropez.
5 Loire Valley

Known as the garden of France, the Loire Valley is the ideal place to visit during late spring as this is when the gardens of the region's impressive Chateaus begin to bloom. History lovers will also adore this region as it is home to over 100 of the biggest castles in France which date back to the 15th and 17th centuries. During spring, there is an average high temperature of 20C - perfect for exploring all that the Loire Valley has to offer.

Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia join star-studded Irish Open field
Four-time Major-winner Ernie Els and Ryder Cup talisman, Sergio Garcia, have become the latest superstars to add their names to this year’s Irish Open at Royal County Down - fast becoming one of the strongest fields in the tournament’s recent history.

This year’s event will mark Garcia’s first appearance in 15 years at the tournament which launched his professional career as a precocious teenager in 1999, when he captured his first European Tour title at Druids Glen.
Meanwhile Els, who has accumulated 28 Tour titles during the course of a glittering career spanning more than a quarter of a century, will visit the Irish Open for the first time since 1998.
Their long-awaited return will only add to the growing hype surrounding this year’s event at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland, with American Rickie Fowler and former World Number One Lee Westwood having already announced their attendance alongside tournament host and World Number One Rory McIlroy, his compatriots Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell and defending champion Mikko Ilonen.
McIlroy, whose charitable foundation The Rory Foundation will be the official tournament host this year, has been instrumental in attracting some of the biggest names in world golf to the County Down venue, regarded as one of the greatest links courses in the world.
Garcia, 35, is eagerly anticipating his first appearance on Northern Irish soil as a professional having enjoyed great success in the Republic, where he won the Irish Open as a teenager before playing a prominent role in The Ryder Cup at the K Club in County Kildare seven years later.
Why not join them !
Anyone wishing to witness the action first hand can purchase tickets at www.irishopen.ie. Tickets cost between £30 and £35 per day and families will be delighted to hear that kids under the age of 16 will be admitted FREE as long as they are accompanied by an adult (up to four children are allowed with one paying adult).
Corporate hospitality packages are also available for the event at a cost of £300 + VAT per person. Already sold out on Friday May 29, these exclusive tickets include course admission with reserved grandstand seat on the 18th green, an official programme, reserved VIP parking (for one or two people), and generous hospitality in the Grand Ballroom in the neighbouring Slieve Donard Hotel - including breakfast followed by a Champagne Reception, a buffet lunch served with fine wines, afternoon tea and a complimentary bar.

Virginia, USA 10 Top New Restaurants 2015
Visit Virginia has a number of new innovative restaurants that cater for a variety of tastes and have sent us their list of the Top 10 new restaurants.
1 GRAFFIATO, Richmond
Chef Mike Isabella’s second Graffiato restaurant offers seasonal small plates inspired by the fresh tastes of the Mediterranean cuisine, and the homely style of his Italian-American grandmother’s cooking. Guests can try one of Grandmother Isabella’s best dishes – a carrot gemelli (spiral pasta) with lamb sugo, mint pesto and pecorino. Or they can go for something completely different and try the charred octopus with blackberry mostarda – a fruit and mustard based condiment.
Visit: www.graffiatorva.com
2 HOMEGROWN, Portsmouth
HomeGrown is the epitome of local cuisine – typically using ingredients from a weekly farmers market to create a menu of fresh sandwiches, entrees and regional pizzas. The aptly named ‘HomeGrown’ is a sauté of local fresh vegetables that changes depending on the market. The Farmer pizza is a firm favourite too, with local bacon, spinach and caramelized onions.
3 LAGER HEADS, Virginia Beach
Visitors of the state can relax just feet away from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront with a fresh, cold beer in their hand at the suitably named Lager Heads. This outdoor seated restaurant goes to town on the burger front, including the Cowboy Burger – a beef patty with cheddar cheese, tobacco onions, whisky laced barbecue sauce and sweet pickles on Texas toast.
4 LEGRAND KITCHEN, Norfolk
A tiny 16 seat restaurant based in Norfolk, LeGrand is said to be inspired by good food and rock ‘n’ roll, creating satisfying fresh dishes made with local, seasonal cuisine. The main dishes change with the seasons, but diners can eat their way through their seasonal salads in the sunshine, or try the Pimento Cheese smeared on toasted potato bread.
Visit: www.legrandkitchen.com
5 PASTUREQ, Charlotesville
If guests are looking for a night of delicious Southern style BBQ food whilst chilling out with friends, Pastureq is the place to go. Diners can snack on pimento cheese and devilled eggs whilst they chat way into the night, or eat their way through the Three Meat Platter – a plate full of delicious pulled pork, beef brisket and hot sausage link.
6 LUCY’S, Richmond
For something a little quieter and quaint, travellers should head to Lucy’s. A friendly, comforting restaurant featuring Monrovia Farm beef and other produce from the local farm, Lucy’s is an uncomplicated approach to good food. Lots of the dishes are centred on the delectable Monrovia beef, for instance the dry-aged beef of the day, as well as providing delicious veggie sides such as black eyed peas and stewed tomatoes.
7 OFF THE HOOK, Chesapeake
Both a fresh seafood restaurant and a seafood market, Off The Hook has a relaxed vibe offering the best from the sea. The menu is created each day with what is seasonal and fresh from the market, but a keen favourite is the whole snapper – tender, flaky, moist, and deliciously fresh.
8 REPUBLIC KITCHEN AND BAR, Arlington
For contemporary comfort food with a modern twist, guests can head over to Republic Kitchen and Bar. Offering bar favourites, including chicken and waffles served with maple-bourbon-bacon syrup, this chic restaurant is airy and inviting.
Visit: www.republic-arlington.com
9 THE SHACK, Staunton
One for the serious foodies, The Shack offers an innovative menu of classic Virginian dishes. Guests can sit in the shack-like interior and feast on the Maple Quail – oyster-cornbread stuffing, pumpkin, Brussel sprouts, cranberries and chestnuts, and finish with the Sweet Potato Fry Pie with lemon curd and burnt marshmallow fluff. The Shack has also been named one of the South’s best new restaurants in 2014 by Southern Living Magazine.
10 LE YACA, Williamsburg
Having re-opened in a new location, Le Yaca is now offering a bigger menu filled with delicious French cuisine in a relaxed surrounding. Les Escargots are recommended for all the foodies – half-dozen plump snails presented in wells filled with rich, melted garlic and parsley butter, and a side of tomato concassee with bread ready for dipping.
