Lufthansa introduces new fare concept for Europe

The new Economy Class fare options “Light”, “Classic” and “Flex” shall apply from 1 October 2015, for domestic and European flights and will offer different services depending on the price.
Jens Bischof,  of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board ssys: “It is the wish of many customers to only pay for the services they actually make use of. With this new fare concept, we are doing just that.”
In addition to the actual flight itself, all of the fare options include one piece of hand luggage, snacks and drinks on board, a reserved seat at check-in from 23 hours before take-off, as well as Award, Status and Select Miles. Additional services, such as seats with more legroom or an upgrade to Business Class, can be booked separately at any time, even after ticket purchase.

Economy Light
The new Light fare will be the most economical option for those traveling only with hand luggage and not in need of any ticket flexibility. The Light fare can be booked from only 89 Euro for a return flight. No rebooking or refund is possible with this option.
Economy Classic
The Classic fare includes the opportunity to check-in a piece of luggage of up to 23 kg. This option also offers a new, additional opportunity for many passengers to secure their desired seat, free-of-charge, at booking. The Classic fare can be booked from 129 Euro for a return flight.
Economy Flex
The Flex fare is for passengers that require more flexibility in their travel planning. In addition to the free seat reservation, it offers the opportunity to rebook the flight at no extra cost or change the itinerary. With this fare, frequent fliers will get an additional 50 per cent of Premium Miles credited in their Miles & More promotion. The extra cost of the Flex fare as compared to the Classic fare is between 60 and 160 Euro, depending on route.
Business Class
Besides the three Economy fares, there continues to be a Business Class fare which includes all the usual services and conveniences of this travel class, such as access to the lounge, increased luggage allowance of 2 x 32 kg, seat reservation and an open seat next to it, and priority boarding.       The novelty is the full flexibility in rebooking and cancellation. Thus, in the new price concept, all Business Class fares will be re-bookable without a fee and refundable free-of-charge. If the originally planned booking class is no longer available, an extra charge may be necessary under certain circumstances. The Business Class fare is the premium offer and especially suitable for business customers and discerning leisure travelers. The Business Class fare is available from only 399 Euro for a return flight.
Lufthansa is introducing the new fare concept together with Austrian Airlines, SWISS and Brussels Airlines.

Puglia - provides the finest quality Olive Oil

For the very first time Pat Keenan shot some video footage
during a visit to Masseria Brancati, a typical Puglia farmhouse, in Ostuni.
Their olive grove dates back to Roman times.
Two to three thousand years old trees still provide
the finest quality Olive Oils.

Corrado Rodio owner and guide at Masseria Brancati, a typical Puglia farmhouse, in Ostuni (also known as The White City) shows us around the olive grove in the largest olive growing region in the world.
For six generations the Rodio family has produced extra virgin olive oil and now they also have opened the masseria (farmhouse) as a bed and breakfast accomodation. The original living quarters have been transformed into three accommodations, leaving the other structures and its original architectural features unaltered. In 1880 the old  underground olive mill was abandoned and is today a museum. Don Domenico Rodio the masseria’s owner at the time built a second building used up until the 1960s. Now the old building with its original stone mills are a museum and kept in perfect condition. You'll see it toward the end of the video. You can also see numerous old tools that were used during the production of olive oil over the centuries.
A little bit more than an hour away you can visit historic and interesting towns -  Otranto, Lecce, Gallipoli, Trani, Castel del Monte. Blue flagged sandy beaches are also nearby and in about two hours you can visit the famous rock dwellings of Matera, San Giovanni Rotondo.
Apart from the owner’s residence the masseria has an apartment and two mini apartments, which can be rented as self sufficient units or use can be made of the bed and breakfast service.
The Stanza Azzurra and Stanza Rosa rooms are very comfortable. The masseria's guests relax in natural surroundings, taste the local specialities, fresh farm eggs and sample fine extra virgin olive oil which is produced and sold in the masseria (farmhouse). Guided tours, including a tasting of the olive oil, can be arranged.

The Houses of Parliament in London
On a visit to London Louise Coughlan took a
political journey through the Palace of Westminster

Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, London                                                                   Photo: Louise Coughlan

The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, is the meeting place for the House of Lords and the House of Commons.  The old mediaeval style palace was destroyed in a fire on 16th October 1834.  The cause of that horrendous blaze was the burning of tally sticks, which the Exchequer used in his accounting procedures up until 1826.  On this occasion the sticks were discarded in a negligent way and this led to a chimney fire, which ran under the floors and up the walls.

The fire destroyed a huge part of the palace, including the Lords Chamber, St Stephens Chapel (The meeting place of the House of Commons), the Painted Chamber and the official residences of the speaker and the clerk of the House of Commons.
The London Fire Engine establishment, managed to save some parts of the old Houses of Parliament.
In 1836, architect Charles Barry made plans to rebuild this beautiful building into a gothic style palace.  The remains of the old palace (except the Jeweled Tower) were grouped into the new building with over 1100 rooms surrounding two courtyards.  Charles and partner Augustus helped with the interior of the palace.  Starting in 1840, the reconstruction went on for thirty years.

A wonderful audio journey
In the United Kingdom, the palace is one of the main centers for political life.  The Elizabeth Tower, also known as Big Ben is a major tourist attraction, a very iconic backdrop for almost every movie made in London.  The famous clock tower is an emblem of parliamentary democracy.
With an interest in politics, my family and I, on a recent visit, embarked on a wonderful audio journey and were transported back through time.
The Great Hall held a very interesting synopsis on the abolition of the slave trade.  On the 25th March 1807 a bill was passed to abolish the slave trade in the UK and also requested other European countries to do the same.  Most supporters were hoping for slavery to be ceased completely, however it took another twenty six years for this to be done.

The House of Commons is now the most politically significant chamber.  In the 13th century, the King held a royal court and it wasn't unusual for the likes of Barons and Earls to give their counsel.  In 1254 two knights from each shire were summoned to the King's court to give out grants when needed.  However ten years later, the most powerful Baron in the country, Simon de Montefort, issued writs in the King's name for the return of four knights from each shire to discuss the state of the country.  Then in 1265 he issued writs for the return of two knights and burgesses from each borough.  This was seen as the start of the House of Commons.
In 1275 Edward I held his 'first General Parliament,' and summoned together leading churchmen,  knights, burgesses, citizens and barons.  Thirty Parliaments were held in his twenty five year reign.  Not all citizens or local communities played a part nor were required to attend.  When Edward II and Edward III were in power, they attended more often.  The House of Commons had then been regarded as essential and we could see from the layout of the room that to this day it plays a huge part in British politics.  The seats faced each other and miniature microphones hung down from the ceiling so that everyone could make themselves heard. The Houses of Parliament, now televised daily are well known but a visit to this wonderful establishment in person, gives it an added significance.

The division of the two chambers
In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the Commons grew in importance.  The pressure was on for Parliament to be summoned on an annual basis but the king only tended to summon it when he needed money.  Tension grew between the king and parliament and at certain times the knights and burgesses met separately from the kings and nobles, and so began the division of the two chambers.
As early as 1340, Parliament took an interest in how money was being collected and how it was being spent.  Auditors were employed to monitor this.

During the Tudor era, Parliament's position became stronger, as monarchs needed them in their political and religious battles.  Fine portraits from the Tudor era adorn the walls of the palace including King Henry VIII and his six wives.  A seat in the House of Commons became a privilege, and the younger house had become the more significant chamber.

The monarch cannot govern without Parliament's consent
In the Peers corridor, there is a painting of Charles I raising his standard at Nottingham in 1642.

' reminding us of The English Civil War, essentially, it was between between Parliamentarians (Roundheads) and Royalists (Cavaliers) over, principally, the manner of the country's governance. The outcome resulted in execution of Charles I and the replacement of English monarchy with what was called the Commonwealth of England under the personal rule of Oliver Cromwell. Although, after Cromwell's death, the monarchy was restored, constitutionally, it  was now established that the monarch cannot govern without Parliament's consent.

The House of Lords
The House of Lords can claim to have originated from the mediaeval era, when the king summoned the Anglo Saxon Whitenagemot and its successor and the Norman cura of the 12th and 13th centuries to the courts to proffer its advice on the levying of taxes.  A cura was made up of the leading barons and churchmen of the kingdom.  Upon the barons death his son would be acquired to attend.  In the 14th century when the knights and burgesses met separately to the barons and churchmen, a separation of the two houses occurred, i.e. the House of Commons and the House of Lords.  The two houses were equal; however the House of Commons was responsible for initiating taxation.  The Lords attempted to initiate bills to raise taxes but the Commons denied this, when Henry IV was seated in 1407.  The Commons extended its privilege denying the rights of the Lords to amend money bills.  In other matters the House of Lords and the House of Commons were equal.

Turkey Trot
Pat Keenansaw a lot of what Turkey can offer in just a few days

An adaptation (with extra material and photos} of an article

Antalya
On our Turkish Airlines flight from Dublin to Istanbul the pilot welcomed one passenger by name, President Michael D Higgins was heading to commemorate Ireland's 3,000 war dead at Gallipoli. In Turkey, however, it is remembered as the last victory of the Ottoman Empire before its fall and start of an independent Turkey.
Apart from some of the best luxury hotels on magnificent sunny Mediterranean beaches, Turkey inherits a wealth of history, culture and, a richly diverse cuisine from the days of the once powerful Ottoman empire which, in its day, controlled much of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, the Caucasus and North Africa. Thanks to the forward thinking of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, credited with being the founder of modern Turkey, they have managed to create a secular society comfortably taking on its role of bridging Europe to Asia. A predominately Moslem nation, a member of the western military alliance NATO and an associate member of the European Community, Turkey underpinned this position yet again at the general election in June this year. Everywhere I travelled I experienced nothing short of a very friendly and welcoming people. At our hotel I even gatecrashed the dance floor of a local wedding. The groom, recognizing a foreigner, came over to extend a warm welcome to our party to join their celebrations and a good night was had by all. But Turkey, like all countries in the general region have experienced some threat from terrorism.
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs urge trippers in Turkey to exercise caution, advise that might just apply to travel almost anywhere, even at home. But they do strongly advise against travelling to the border areas between Turkey and Syria in light of the current instability in the region, in particular the provinces of Hatay, Kilis, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa and Mardin. The Turkish military have operations along the Turkish border with Iraq and you are strongly advised against all travel to the border provinces of Hakkari and Sirnak. In addition, they would recommend against travel to the Siirt and Tunceli provinces. None of these regions are included in this article.

From Istanbul we continued eastward on an internal Turkish Airlines flight to Antalya, the largest Turkish city on the Mediterranean coast and gateway to all those beautiful beaches. If you want more then just sun, sea and sand it's also a good base for trips and tours to see and experience different parts of Turkey.
From Antalya one short trip (45 kilometers) will take you to Aspendos, a once important Roman city on the Eurymedon River. For the Romans it was a significant port, navigable by river from the Mediterranean Sea. Well, Romans do what Romans do, and they built a massive theatre to seat 15,000 which  today is almost entirely intact. As their population grew they then built an long and impressive aqueduct to supply water from across an entire valley, and it too remains remarkably intact, picturesquely surrounded by orange trees - at the time of my visit there was an unforgettable permeating fragrance of the orange blossom.
From the nearby town of Manavgat several boat companies offer trips along the Manavgat River taking you, in about 45 minutes, to a long stretch of sandy beach. Along the way enjoy a relaxing drink and take in the views from the upper deck and watch the many different vessel plying up and down the river, Very popular with the children -and to be honest adults too- are the many elaborate pirate ships resembling those in the ever popular 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films

On another day, we set off on a 3-hour drive to Pamukkale and Hierapolis. We travelled up over the Taurus Mountains, and into flat fertile plains to Pamukkale and Hierapolis. For the mountain part, best take something warm to wear, even though the sun is shining, high up there temperature can drop quite a bit. Pamukkale is an extraordinary looking place. A brilliant white landscape, at first sight like a sculptured snowy glacier of hills and ravines, but it just about the opposite. Natural hot lime rich springs have over thousands of years formed chalky lime deposits to create this gleaming white landscape. Originally the place was called Hierapolis, a city regarded as sacred because of the mineral springs of waters, generally assumed, to be miraculous. Most of it was destroyed in a 7th-century earthquake but bits of this once sacred city are still here to explore. Just a short walk up the hill from the white area stands another well preserved Roman theatre, built over many years by emperors Hadrian, better known for the wall he built in Britain, and Septimius Severus, who who fatefully ignored that wall and died attempting to invade Caledonia (today Scotland).

Wellness tourism flourishes all around Pamukkale, so if you feel inclined to soothe your tired travel muscles in mineral-rich hot spring waters you can book into one of the many spa based hotels. We overnighted in the Pam Thermal Hotel 4-star hotel in Pamukkale. Taking their words for it, they have "aromatherapy and hydrotherapy in thermal baths for health, beauty and healing". And of course, massages, steam baths and sauna in their spa center.
Inevitably, no matter which tours you choose, you will find some breaks included to visit some commercial outlets. These can be irritating, but sometimes entertaining or informative and maybe find a bargain. Make the best of it, everyone has to make a living and as always, buyer beware. On my Turkish tours they were better that other places I've endured, for example, on our trip to Pamukkale we visited a carpet factory. not just a showroom but watched the whole process from silk worms to skilled workers weaving some amazing works of art. In a leather factory we were treated to a full fashion show and an opportunity to purchase very fashionable leather gears at one third the retail price. In a large store I enjoyed watching a swarm of Japanese ladies purchase jars of something that promised to be Turkish viagra.
Antalya: Ottoman era clock tower

But don't forget the city of Antalya itself, well worth a visit, soak up the culture, stroll through narrow streets full of colorful markets, get in some shopping, visit the busy harbour front, stop for a bite to eat and do some people watching around the massive Ataturk Memorial in Cumhuriyet Square.
'Must sees' include: Antalya's old town Hadrian's Gate, also called the 'Three Gates' erected in 130 AD as a a triumphal arch for the visit to Antalya of that Roman emperor we encountered in Pamukkale. The old town's narrow alleyways take you downhill to the harbour. There again you will encounter those pirate tour ships, In the Karaalioğlu Park visit Hıdırlık Tower, a 2nd-century fortification, The Ottoman era clock tower and the 18th century Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Mosque.
also worth a visit, the Antalya Museum (www.antalyamuzesi.gov.tr/en), west of the Kaleiçi district - accessible by the old style tram from the Kale Kapısı tramstop - has a fine collection artifacts and statues from the Stone through the Bronze Ages to Byzantium.

No need, by the way, to book an early morning wake-up call at your hotel. Even though Turkey is secular, ninety-eight percent of the population is Muslim, and very morning at about 5am the muezzin, cries out a call to prayer from a minaret - every mosque has at least one and there are over 82,600 mosques in Turkey. Very likely there's one close to your bedroom window.
Although rare enough, you will see people smoking in bars and restaurants, mostly locals and mostly not in touristy places. In one place, the barbecue chef, a cigerette stuck to his upper lip, carefully turned the meat skewers over the glowing embers, which when you think of it, is ok. Ashes to ashes and all that.
But more unforgivable, is the traditional practice of eating all sorts of delicious mezze (like tapas in Spain) and washing it down with Raki - I can tell you, I stuck with the wine. I know Raki is the national drink and all that - but the local practice of drinking it throughout the meal - try it by all means, but for me, it's a bit like eating a juicy medium rear Angus steak while chewing on strings of black licorice. Raki is Turkey's Mediterranean anise liquor, like Ouzo in Greece, Pernod in France, Sambucca in Italy. Better after the meal.

Eating out
Ali Haydar Ocakbasi Barbecue restaurant, I enjoyed this place, unassuming on the outside but the moment you enter there's the heady smell of smokey meat mixed with the sounds of Turkish music and chatting eaters. Nice selection of hand chopped spicy meat, mostly lamb, Turkish kabābs grilled on skewers over charcoal. Locals, by the way, pronounce it as 'kabobs'. All served with salads and mezzo. If things get a bit over spiced, no Turkish meal is complete without Cacik, a natural yogurt based mezze, tastes good but also aids digestion, but then, so does raki. See my video below

Georgia & the Carolinas, USA
Pat Keenan recently met a high level delegation
from all three states in Fire Restaurant,
Dublin, Ireland, enjoyed a good lunch
and recalled a trip to another Dublin
It was a rainy day in Dublin, but in the air, there was a perceptible feel of that special US southern hospitality as Georgia and North & South Carolina hosted a media lunch this month at Fire Restaurant beside the Mansion House in Dawson Street. A large high level delegation from the three states arrived to invite increase sales from the Irish market. And there was reason to celebrate, last year, 2014, visits from Ireland increased by almost 25%. In the following days they would visit the UK where visits also increased (but not as much as ours).
That delegation included; from Georgia Tourism, Tracy Vaughan, Director of Business Development and International Accounts; MD of Georgia Tourism UK and Ireland office, Peter Hanniford; from Atlanta, Georgia, Brandon Barnes, International Sales Director; from Savannah, Georgia, Mindy Shea, director of tour and travel sales; from Charleston Area, South Carolina, Suzanne B Wallace, director of sales; from North Carolina, Heidi Walters, director, partner and industrial relations; from Charlotte, North Carolina, Brandy Larrick, director of business development and tourism.
Many years ago, gosh it was 1992, I visited Georgia and from Atlanta drove south to a city called Dublin where I was greeted by the Mayor of the time, Robert J Walker. I gave him by business card, he gave me his, but not before he crossed out the 'Robert J' and wrote 'Bob.' I reminisced about this with Tracy Vaughan, Director of Georgia Tourism, and also also recalled that Dublin GA had no pub. As we looked out into our Dublin's Dawson Street you could count three just across the street. But in Dublin GA., despite all the shamrocks and pretty much everything being green…there were no Irish, not even in the cemetery. More on that later.
Apparently there is a pub now and what's more, Tracy tells me. "Dublin GA. has the best pizza in the state, made in a wood fired brick oven."Deano's Italian Grille is at 110 West Jackson Street, Dublin, GA. All of which leads me to believe there are Italians there.

Wanted! more Irish
in DUBLIN Georgia
where Pat Keenan wore the green
City Hall, Dublin, Georgia in 1992
Henry and Christina Courtenay have two homes, one in Belfast and the other in Dublin. "In Belfast", explains Henry, "we're Americans, in Dublin we're Irish" They first went to Dublin to retire, thinking " nice place and there will be lots of Irish there." There were none. They moved there anyway and became celebrities, the only Irish in Dublin, a fair city almost centrally located in the southern state of Georgia, USA, and whose residents lived blissfully unaware that Dublin lost to Donegal in the All-Ireland Football final last year (that was1992).
Dublin is 120 miles southeast of Atlanta, Unfortunately unlike the Dublin in Ireland they don't have a daily Delta Airlines flight to Atlanta (2015: Delta still fly direct Dublin - Atlanta) You exit Atlanta unto a massive roundabout of State, Interstate and other assorted loops that make spaghetti junction in Birmingham look like country crossroads. (writing today, my comparison might have been Dublin's Red Cow M50 roundabout). Don't panic, by the way, as you glance sideways and see the nose of a jumbo jet getting large in the car's side window. This is normal, they told me later, the Interstate is near the airport. After six attempts and a few more Jumbo near misses you should be pointing east on Interstate 75 which will take you through Macon on to Interstate 16 to Dublin.
Bill Clinton, George Bush or Ross Perot?, I took part in a political caucus in Ma Hawkin's Dublin GA
Dublin, the largest city in Lauren County, is deep in the cotton, peanut and bible belt. I could find no pubs but there was a church, of some denomination or other, on every corner. The second question I asked, why no Irish (apart from the Courteneys)? I'm directed to Ma Hawkin's, a diner in the old American mould, where the town's 'movers and shakers' hang out. (it's still there at 314 Fairmont Dr, Dublin, GA 31021) They were none too sure either, preferring a more pressing topic - which way to vote in the upcoming Presidential Elections (Bill Clinton won that one against George W Bush and Ross Perot) and even more, which way to vote in the referendum on a proposed State lottery (For the record, they voted 'yes' on that one). Ma Hawkins, by the way, serve great Apple pie!
It flows through Dublin but it is not the Liffey
I tried the Dublin - Laurens Museum and I got a potted history from John Ross and Mrs Claxton III. To the west of Dublin is the red muddy Oconee River name after the original inhabitants, the Oconee Indians who unfortunately sided with the British during the revolutionary war. Many Tories (Americans who wanted to maintain a union with Britain) fled here and managed to form an alliance with the Oconee. When the war ended, Tory lands were confiscated and the Oconee were relocated The land was given to patriots of the revolution under the Head Right Act. The head of a family was given 200 acres and 50 addtional acres for each slave not exceeding ten and al was tax-free for ten years, Many of these were Scots-Irish, Presbyterian and other Ulster Protestant Dissenters from Ireland, and they set up homes on the east bank of the river with the Oconee original inhabitants on the west side and the"troubles" began. We are told that Indians would cross the river and steal and palefaces would retaliate. The palefaces would entice Indians across, get them drunk and rob them. In 1802 the problem was solved when the paleface government ended the Indian title to the lands and redistributed the lands by lottery.
The land now occupied by Dublin was purchased in 1812 by the county from Joseph L Hill for $100 cash in the hand and when the town needed a name Jonathan Sawyer, described as a 'pioneer' named it Dublin, according to legend, to keep his wife, who was from old Dublin, happy.
Dublin continued to be attacked by Indians until 1845 when President Andrew Jackson moved all Indians west of the Mississippi. Census figures foe 1845 show Laurens County had 3,258 whites and 2,760 slaves,
Lumber, cotton and peanuts are the city's main sources of income, although they also manufacture guidance systems for missiles. There is a daily newspaper, local TV and 5 radio stations and like Dublin, Ireland, golf is important as a recreational pursuit.
While Dublin Ireland and Dublin, Georgia may be about as similar as chalk and peanut butter, if you're Irish there sure will be a welcome there for you !

While in the area:
Ocilla and Irwinville
Visit where the place where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured by Union forces. Jefferson Davis Memorial Historic Site, 338 Jeff Davis Park Rd., Fitzgerald, GA 31750.
Plains
Home of the 39th President Jimmy Carter. This town is so rural Americana that it might be mistaken for a Hollywood backlot - wooden store fronts, pickup trucks, a railway line on the main street and a fill-up gas pumps a Billy Bj's Pit Stop, formerly Billy Carter's Gas Station.
Andersonville
During the American Civil War, in just 14 months, over 12,000 Union prisoners died here. Today it is a National Cemetery and a museum dedicated to prisoners of all the world's conflicts. AndersonvilleNational Historic Site, 760 POW Rd, Andersonville, GA 31711,

Pat Keenan visits South Carolina's historic city
CHARLESTON
"It's the only other American city I'd consider living in" the man from San Francisco told me, I think I know what he means. Charleston also has that 18th century European look, except more so. The tallest spire in San Francisco is a bank. Charleston to the best of my recall is the only American city where the tallest structure is a church spire.
One of Americas most historic places, the peninsula was occupied by Indians ( as I fondly called them as a child, way before we now correctly use 'native Americans') when the British colonists landed in 1670 and named it Charles Town after their king Charles II. By 1775, along with the rest of South Carolina, Charleston was in rebellion against the British. Their declared independence was short lived. British forces occupied the city and most importantly the fine strategic harbour for almost all of the Revolutionary War, until one autumn night when the town crier chanted "Half past twelve of a stormy night and Cornwallis has surrendered" The American army mached in to great celebrations in 1782.
In 1861 Confederate forces fired the first shot of the Civil War at Union occupied Fort Sumter. A short boat trip to the fort is recommended.
Union flag-raising over Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, 1865,                  Source:Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
Before exploring Charleston's many attractions, visit the excellent Visitor Center at 375 Meeting Street and watch a free free film of the city and information on all sorts of tours, by coash, carriage boat, horse, even balloon or on foot. For a pint of Guinness visit Tommy Condon's Irish pub. UPDATE: it's still there at Rainbow Market, 160 Church St, Charleston, SC 29401. (www.tommycondons.com). The balloon rides by a number of companies are also still operating.

Over 1 million Irish travelled to Spain this year

“I want to thank the Irish public for making Spain the leading destination for holiday-makers says Gonzalo Ceballos, Director of the Spanish Tourism Office in Ireland, the welcoming nature of the people, the rich culture and relaxed atmosphere, attracts and unites Irish and Spanish people making it a success story year after year.”
Some of the Spanish Tourist Board's winning Irish team, Sara Rivero, Kathryn McDonnell, Inma Bernabeu, Gonzalo Ceballos, Sara Milla and Elma Barreiro, seen here celebrating “San Fermines” in Dublin recently.

Over 1 million Irish
travelled to Spain this year
According to figures released from the Spanish Statistical Institute and the Spanish Tourism Office over 1.2 million passengers flew from Ireland to Spanish airports between January and August 2015 (a 12% increase year on year).
The most popular destinations, by order of volume, are the Canary Islands, Andalucía, Cataluña, Valencia Region and the Balearic Islands. These five destinations account for 90% of Irish tourism to Spain.

“Spain offers a broad choice of things to do and discover: new tastes, cultural and adventure travel, great football matches. Spain is a world leader with 45 biosphere destinations and 44 world heritage sites and has over 435 golf courses and 300 days of sun. Of course Spain also offers over 3,000 beaches and 678 blue flag awards marking it out as the number one country in the world for such facilities so there is no better place to relax. Irish tourists also value the fact that Spain has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe and an excellent healthcare system.”

According to CSO figures Spain accounted for nearly 1 in 4 of all the nights spent abroad by Irish tourists in 2014 (13.25 million nights 24.7% of total) this is more than the combined nights spent in France, Italy, Portugal, Germany and Northern Ireland.
More Irish tourists holidayed in Spain than the combined total to France, Italy and Portugal making Spain only second to the UK in terms of the number of trips taken by Irish residents.
Travel to Spain has the highest share in Irish travel expenditure, 21% of which was spent on travel to Spain (in excess of 1.2 billion euro). This is more than the expenditure of Irish travel to France, Germany, Italy and Portugal combined; or to “North America” and “Asia and Middle East” together.

Gonzalo Ceballos added that “the welcoming nature of the people, the rich culture and relaxed atmosphere attracts and unites Irish and Spanish people making it a success story year after year.”

King George IV
on a day trip to Howth
Pat Keenan is a regular
King GeorgeIV stepped unsteadily ashore at the end of the West Pier, Howth         Photo Pat Keenan
Down along the West Pier at Howth people stroll beside the fishing boats. They eat fish 'n' chips, drink espressos and cappuccinos, they check out the menus of trendy fishy cafés, and above it all, sea gulls shriek, cry and dive over discarded fish bits. Not many will notice the imprint of a pair of feet etched into one of the granite paving stones. There is a plaque, mostly ignored, looking as it does, like some kind of warning sign. It points to the spot where King George IV, on his 59th birthday unsteadily tottered ashore, having polished off a goose pie and, appropriately, copious amounts of Irish whiskey. His footprints were later chiseled out on the harbour granite by Robert Campbell, a local stonemason.
King George IV: coronation portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence

George IV, was King of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover between 1820 and 1830.  He was the son of Mad King George III. He lifestyle was that of the Regency era, a tad extravagant to put it mildly, but in his early years he did cut a bit of a dash in taste, elegance and flair. So renowned was he in this respect, they took to calling him " the first gentleman of England" In later The Times newspaper opined that he had squandered much of his talent, saying he would always choose "a girl and a bottle to politics and a sermon"
George IV's foot print on Howth harbour: etched in granite                         Photo Pat Keenan
It is not known what they called George IV when he arrived in Howth arrived on August 17, 1821 just weeks after his coronation on July 19, 1821. This was not the first state visit by a English monarch to Ireland, but he was the first king to arrive without an accompanying army. It was also the first visit of a monarch since the Act of Union in 1801. He stayed in Dublin for 18 days departed from Dún Laoghaire, then called Dunleary, but was promptly renamed Kingstown in the kings honour. As he departed Daniel O'Connell presented him with a laurel crown. In time Daniel would be let down to find this king would become an a unwavering opponent of Catholic emancipation.
