What's on 2015: in the tropical Islands of Tahiti
Exciting events happen every year, and 2015 is no exception.
Situated in the southeast Pacific Ocean and spread over five large archipelagos,
The Islands of Tahiti provide events with a backdrop of breathtaking scenery.
Tahiti Pearl Regatta, April 27-May 3, 2015
The four day race takes competitors between the islands of Raiatea, Bora Bora, Huahine and Taha’a. The Society and the Tuamotu archipelagos meet all the criteria for an unforgettable sailing holiday, with the island of Raiatea often referred to as the “sailing island”. The friendly competition is open to all types of sailboats from all nationalities. Festivities begin before the sailors’ departure from Uturoa market on Raiatea, and singing, dancing, and sampling local delicacies continues each evening after the day’s racing. Listen to the ‘tamures’ of the local bands, indulge in traditional barbequed fish, and enjoy the warm sun and lively atmosphere of the competition.
Festival du Graffiti, May 4-9, 2015
Talented graffiti artists from around the world are invited to participate in Tahiti’s second annual graffiti festival, organised by Tahiti New Generation. Throughout the week, over 1500 square meters of the walls of Place Toata will be painted in a celebration of colour and creativity. Visitors can wander down to the harbour to see the artists at work, as well as viewing the impressive final pieces.
Tahiti Fashion Week, June 8-12, 2015
For the second year in 2015, Tahiti will host its own Fashion Week from 8th June. The event will showcase Polynesian creativity and talent with local designers presenting their clothing, jewellery and accessories collections. Tahiti fashion week is a unique experience for visitors, with the passion and excitement of the designers and ‘vahine’ models producing an amazing show for spectators.
Open de Golf Tahiti, June 23-28, 2015
Tahiti is firmly establishing itself as a diverse destination when it comes to sport. Professional golfers from countries including Australia, Japan and the USA will descend on the stunning Atimaono Golf Course (50km from Papeete) for the four day competition. Visiting golf aficionados can not only watch the tournament in the spectacular surroundings, but also compete in the amateur competition that follows the Pro tournament.
Heiva i Tahiti, July 2-18, 2015
Heiva i Tahiti is a cultural explosion of singing, dancing, parades, local food and traditional sport - including a stone lifting competition, a javelin- throwing event, outrigger canoe races and a fruit carrying competition. Hugely popular with the locals, the festival has become a symbol of Polynesian heritage and a great chance to interact with local people whilst learning the sacred Tahitian past-times. Dance, sing, eat and compete; this year’s ‘Celebration of Life’ is not to be missed.
Billabong Pro Surfing Competition, August 10-25, 2015
With seven “perfect 10” scores, last year’s Pro Surfing Competition at Teahupoo was the most exciting surf competition of the ASP World Tour 2014, and this year spectators can expect another thriller. With the likes of four-time champion Kelly Slater and reigning champion Gabriel Medina amongst the 40 pro-surfers returning to the South Pacific waters, visitors can relax on the beach whilst witnessing world-class talent.
Hawaiki Nui Va'a International Canoe Race, November, 4-6, 2015
This 130km outrigger canoe race is split into three stages over three days; competitors begin in Huahine and cross the finish line in Bora Bora. The race is an extreme test of physical and mental endurance, but with over 100 crews coming from all over the world, it was also designed to link the islands and celebrate the beauty of the South Pacific.
