The new series (6th) of Great British Railway Journeys starts January 5, 2015 BBC2 N Ireland 6.30pm with Michael Portillo in Ayrshire, Scotland traveling from Ayr to Stewarton. The first leg of a journey through southern Scotland from west to east begins in Ayr, where he admires the granite island of Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde before making an effort at the sport of curling, with a Scottish world champion. The Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers invites Michael to take part in a competition, at Barassie he rides the footplate of a freight train hauling coal on Scotland's oldest railway line as he heads on towards Stewarton
Michael continues his journey through southern Scotland, Great British Railway Journeys, Tuesday, January 6, 2015 BBC2 N Ireland 6.30pm, beginning in the industrial town of Greenock, from where he boards the world's last sea-going paddle steamer. He visits the Glasgow School of Art, then travels to Blantyre to find out about a famous explorer and visits a bakery in Strathaven and ends this stage at Larkhall
From Motherwell Michael continues to the Forth Rail Bridgeand on to the Falls of Clyde, which influenced the works of Wordsworth and Coleridge. On then to Cumbernauld and Linlithgow where he examines in awe, the works of the engineers who built the Union Canal. Great British Railway Journeys, Wednesday, January 7, 2015 BBC2 N Ireland 6.30pm.
Michael starts this episode in Stirling, scene of the Battle of Bannockburn and then north to Crieff in Perth and Kinross to sample a Victorian spa. In Perth, he takes the Highland Main Line to Pitlochry and one of Queen Victoria's favourite haunts, and ends his day with a wee dram in Scotland's smallest distillery, Great British Railway Journeys, Thursday, January 8, 2015 BBC2 N Ireland 6.30pm.
On Friday Michael is on the final leg of his journey across southern Scotland from west to east, starting at the birthplace of golf: St Andrews. In Dunfermline, he finds the humble origins of Carnegie extraordinary philanthropist who worked on the railroads before he made his steel fortune. Then end his trip by crossing the Forth Bridge and on to Edinburgh, where takes the stage in an adaptation of an Oscar Wilde play in the Festival Fringe.
